That is usually a message from the cable box , it may not matter that much. there are at least 16 formats and we only use a few right now.
compatibility is an issue when dealing with different brands , designs and constantly advancing technology. set the Tv format (aspect) to either full or 16x9 then set the cable box to 1080i only, and stretch.

Invalid format means that the PC resolution is too high for the TV to display, you need to set the PC video card resolution to the native resolution of this TV.

I have an LG 42LC2D TV with INVALID FORMAT ON HDMI2

I have had this same issue.

Problem your tv isnt true 1080p meaning it will not work however when you switch to componet cables goto menu then change the display settings to 720p or 1080i then your HDMI connection should work fine.
