I have a very weird problem with my Dell Inspiron 8600. The sound works off and on. I can't figure out exactly how to make it work consistantly. Different things make it work. I had thought it was related to how long the computer was on but that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried turning off other devices and it didn't help. I just don't know what else to try. I have tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. I have also had this system looked at by several other people and they haven't been able to figure it out either.
Running windows xp? okay click start and scroll to control panel. under control panel scroll to system icon and click. the system property box will open. click hardware then the device manager tab. clik on the sound, video and game controllers, this will open and you will see a list of installed sound devices/codecs as well as video codecs. see if the sigmatel codec is listed it is possible that it may be present but not set as the default. this can happen when installed programs such as media player, real player,quicktime.. install their own drivers to control the video and audio components. the codec is simply a driver program which interfaces between the computers installed hardware and the computers software, IE real player. I have an inspiron e1505, I ran into a similar situation and lost my sigma tel driver. it had to be reinstalled. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION------------------- GO TO THE DELL COMPUTERS SUPPORT WEBSITE. type dellsupport on web search navigate to the downloads section where it gives you the option of inputing your computer make and model, then select your oprating system. look for the downloads for audio devices, you should be able to find the sigma tel codec available for download. save the file to your hard drive in a location where you can access it again. okay back to correcting the problem on the device manager display under sound, video and game controllers. if you do not see the sigmatel codec then run the download from dell for the sigmatel and it will install automatically. hopefully this will correct your problem, it sounds to me like it is a driver problem the above steps will definately identify the sourcee and should provide solution to your problem
Click Start>Run, then type 'dxdiag' and hit Enter. A diagnostic will now run. See if windows can find a faulty driver. It may be that there is a fault with the motherboard, hope there's not.
Hey, i have this same problem, mine's an inspiron 1300 with the C major card installed and it acts screwy alot. i believe it's a technical issue with Dell
I thought I'd tried everything to solve this, and almost gave up. Then I went back to the Dell site, looked again at the Sigmatel driver page for my computer, clicked on 'Other Versions' (next to Download Type), and discovered three versions of the driver other than the one the page had selected for me - one of which, although apparently an earlier release, was recommended. So I tried downloading it, and to my amazement - it worked! How long for - we'll see... What's the betting no sound on next reboot?

Whepple
does your problem occur after you use SDHC card?
i got the problem after using SDHC card,

i can not fix now...
SOURCE: Dell Inspiron SigmaTel C-Major Audio won't continue to work
if after reinstalling the operating system and the sound drivers you get the same problem then your sound chip is faulty,
dont know if there is a pcmci sound card but if there is, that would be your solution or else consider swapping the board

When I ran that there were no errors found. When I click on Sound this is what it says "No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."
I am running Windows XP Pro.
The Audio and Legacy Codecs are both listed. The SigmaTel appears as well and has a yellow explination point over it. I have MANY times downloaded the driver for the SigmaTel from the Dell site, removed and reinstalled, updated the driver, you name it. Every time I reinstall it I am told that a problem has occurred, but it doesn't tell me what problem it is. Again, this problem is inconsistant. Weeks from now I will suddenly turn on my computer and there will be sound again. No apparent reason for it to work but it will. The Dell Diagnostics tell me that there aren't any problems. When I run the diagnostics CD, it runs before Windows begins and I have sound and everything is perfect. It is only within the Windows environment that I don't have sound. Thank you for your suggestions and they are excellent suggestions. However, they still don't resolve my problems. I promise you, I am technical and have tried most everything. I work for an IT Company. Every tech has tried to figure this out. They don't know anything about Laptops so that is our limitation. We have
* Updated the BIOS
* Disabled each thing within Windows we can think of because we think it is some kind of conflict.
* Removed and reinstalled the driver 100's of times.
* Consulted the Dell website. (Unfortunately Dell is convinced that my computer is stolen which I assure you it is not but they won't provide me with any assistance with this problem).
* Reformatted and reinstalled Windows.
Anything else you can think of? I am so frustrated with this problem if I hadn't spent so much on this computer I would throw it out the window. Thanks!
Same problem
Like Whepple have the similar problem in that I cannot record through the microphone. I try to use Skype and the person cannot hear me. this problem has occurred recentl and asI am using simga tel and Dell inspiron 8500 as per whepple can this be related. Diagnostics tells me that the microphone is woking properly but i cannot be heard by the person at the end of the line and when I do a test I cannot hear my own voice. help would be appreciated Stella
Not exactly the same but... When I first got my Dell Precision M4300 the OSD displayed sound bars indicating the current volume level. If I pressed the increase version, the OSD reflected this, and vice versa. Then when mucking about with Windows defender I inadvertantly removed the Sigmatel driver responsible for this. I've never been able to get the OSD volume display back (and have tried absolutely everything). There are definitely compatibility issues betwen Dell PC's and notebooks and Sigmatel drivers, but neither organization will acknowledge that. Sorry I don't have a solution for you but if any one has one for my problem please let me know.

i have the same exact problem
Hey, I have the same problem... I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop Designed for Windows XP and the sound no longer works! It stopped working for a long time, not even the geek squad could fix it. Then later, out of the blue it was all working perfectly, I didn't do a thing to make it work, then later that same day it was working... Now, not only will in not play sound, though videos and motion aslo refused to work properly. First I just couldn't hear it, now I can't see it ether! Come to think of it now.... the first sign of this happening I guess was when my videos playing from you tube kept freezing up, and/or the sound was off from the motion of the people's mouths and movement. I thought I only have some kind of virous that I needed to get rid of, or that the website I was on had some functioning problems.
Later on.... I now know that this is actually happening to most of the Dell Inspiron Windows XP Laptops. Not only did geek squaud tell me this, though I've also done some digging into facts my self.
They basically said that it's a system error, it's possible that it may work agian after reseting the computer with a refreshing disk, that would make me loose all of my work and data. But that's not even the worst part! Get this.... there's only a 50/50 percent chane that reseting the pc would work at all; ether way I loose all my memory on the harddrive :(
I have not figured it out completely yet, not even close.
I do get on how you said you though you just had you pc turned on too long. At first I thought that was the same reason, so did my father too.
It's still a mystery to why it refuses to work properly.
Nothing I've Done Has Worked :((
Many People I have taken it to, they say it's a glitch in the soft wear.
They Say it was really broken when I bought it, yet it was working fine when I was using it for the first few months.
It was goning to brake some time, so why not sooner some say to me.
But I Have NOT Even Had it For More Than A Year When It Fist Failed On Me! Now I've Had it for about two years, But it stopped working in about the first few months I had it!
This is so not right, they wouldn't even let me return it!
What good is a waranty if they don't cover they're own mistakes!?! >:(
This not only makes me sad, but also very mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huhg!
