Camera bought 3 days ago. About 50% of the time, when I switch the camera on, the LCD screen is black - although all the icons for flash, time, date etc are there, it's as if the lens cover is on, but I've checked and it's open. The camera takes photos while it's like this and they are also all black. I can see previously taken photos as normal. Sometimes it may start working, but only if I cycle through off/on or into another mode. The camera is fully charged. Any ideas?
I've just spotted something else by staring into the lens under the light while turning the camera on and off - when it works normally the lens looks like an 'eye' ie there is a small 'pupil' visible in the centre a couple of mm in diameter. When it turns on in the 'black screen' mode, the 'pupil' is not visible, like there is a cover over it way at the back of the lens assembly.I've just spotted something else by staring into the lens under the light while turning the camera on and off - when it works normally the lens looks like an 'eye' ie there is a small 'pupil' visible in the centre a couple of mm in diameter. Re: Black LCD Screen
You need to send it in to have it fixed. Call the repairs center at 800-706-2534 and then keep choosing option 1. Tell them what's going on and that you would like to send it in for repairs. If they ask just lie and tell them you already talked to tech support. LOL

If this is a black spot that's in the same place on the LCD screen I would say that there are several pixels that have burnt out and definitely a warranty case.
Think that you mean the S2 IS? If so, Canon has not yet to offered an advisory repair of that particular problem (although many people think they should as this seems to be quite a common problem for the S2). There are however some simple things that you can try to revive your camera from the likely "stuck shutter" problem that you're experiencing. See this blog article.
From what I can understand, if the camera is sill able take pictures but is not displaying any thing on the LCD, then it is a problem with the LCD or LCD cable connecting to rest of the camera or LCD driver on main board.
It can be as simple as a loose flexible PCB connection to the camera main board. ' +

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:
No I don't believe it is your shutter, more than likely it is a LCD Screen problem. I would suggest you take your camera back to the shop where you purchased the camera and have it serviced under warranty.
I had a customer with an Optio 550 come in and it looked like every shot was taken through 'venetian blinds' and the problem was with the LCD Screen and the camera was sent back to Pentax and repaired under warranty.
