I had this problem and it was all resolved by getting a new battery. I managed to find out a number for an english Archos manager and rang his number everyday for about 2 weeks solid. Eventually he sent me a new battery and at the same time I brought 1 from the net. Both batteries work fine and the old one tht came with the unit still messes up the unit. As far as i can tell there is a bad batch of batteries!
Had it happen to me and as it was plugged in at the time was worried sick...I unplugged it and plugged in again, left it to charge for an hour and was all ok..It was as if it couldnt realise that it was charged or the charger maybe wasnt plugged into the unit as 'snugly' as it needed to be and so was acting as if it had no charge.
Mine did that too, and I was freaking out. I don't know if it will work for you, but I took the battery out for hours, maybe 4 or 5 hours. I went to show someone what it was doing, put the battery back in and it worked. It is still freezing when I play music more than it was, but I got my data off at least.
Hi, my archos does the exact same thing, however, when I press on, it turns on, then I hear a "click" and it turns itself off. Only when I have the charger plug in does the archos logo continue to remain on the screen. Did you find out what our problem is?

Make sure you have toggled the switch up at the top. If you see orange on top, flip the switch so that no orange shows. If that is fine, hold down the middle button and the menu button until you see the apple logo when you see the apple logo, continue to press and hold the middle button but press the pause/play button instead of the menu and it should unlock it.
Your archos probably has a glitch in it. You might have to do a system recovery of it. First download the latest firmware program from Archos website. Here is a quick possible fix when the screen comes up reset the archos by inserting a paperclip in the reset hole located at the bottom of the unit right of the connectors it might work it might not. if that doesn't fix the problem do a hard reset when the logo screen comes up hold down the volume+ button until the white recovery page comes up. First try repairing the unit if that doesn't work try format and follow the instructions. the touch screen doesn't function during the recovery page so use the volume+&- buttons & power button. When you get done your archos should be set to factory presets so you have to set it up. Good Luck
I heard of that problem, it could be your charger circuit and it could be your battery. There's a interesting forum post on this at www.newmp3technology.com: http://www.newmp3technology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=700
But here's something else: I'll buy your xs202s if you want.. :) For a reasonable defect-price.
I have one but the display is broken.
Had no luck trying to find that obscure 2" 128x128 backlit greyscale korean display in the IC-market here in Europe.
I had this problem. I was mad. What I do now is not a "fix", it is a workaround. I hold the machine facing me, like I am watching it. I then twist it torsionally, top left corner away, bottom right corner toward me.
It's like there is a crack in the circuit board or something. That works.
