The model is the "Jeep" model, but the "Gator" model came up for the automatic search-they could be similar. Just wanted to clarify.
SOURCE: !st gear won't work
I would replace the shifter assembly. It seems to be a better upgrade with the switches built into the shifter itself. It also has the wiring with it.
As long as the battery seems to work and the motors are going in one of the speeds, then there is not much to the vehicle.
It is a specific Peg Perego Switch assembly.
Hope this helps

I would replace the high/low switch and the reverse switch. One time a replaced the high/low switch and the reverse switch quit on me 2 weeks later.
You can also get the Peg Perego Gator Shifter that upgrades the vehicle.
You can get the parts and repair help at this site

SOURCE: my sons peg perego john deere jeep only sets off
I would get the Peg Perego Gator Shifter Assembly from http://www.shopjandl.com/
Make sure the wires are secure on both motors in the back.
One time I had the same problem and I had loose wires on the motor, but I ended up replacing the switch assembly later because it would only work in 1st gear.
Hope this helps

Thank You Adam! It is not the Gaucho exactly, but the body style looks like a Gaucho but it is John Deere and not as powerful and loaded like the Gaucho sounds (didn't know what it was until you said and I had to google it). I was thinking of just getting new motors and shifter-but would the setup for a gator work for this? It looks to be the same type of units/wiring.
do you have a make/model of the jeep?
all it says on the label is "J Deere Off Road". the numbers I got are
