I tried cleaning the filter and bucket with mild soap. I have not tried the coils yet. It is a strange smell.. like medicine or something. Not moldy or musty.

I tried cleaning the bucket, the filter and the fan blades with vinegar and water last night. It does not look that dirty. My hands stunk, the sink stunk it is very strong. Like the smell of Band Aids x 50!. I just dont know what it could be. I didnt see any burnt wires or really anything unusual. Any ideas??

The only other thing I can think of is dehumidifiers take moisture from the air by blowing air across copper coils, the water accumulates on the coils so they are constantly damp, and probably star to smell kinda like sulfer, so unplug your dehumidifier spray the coils vinegar and water mixed (never use bleach it will damage them)
also the fan blades can harbor mildew and mold with it still unplugged remoc\ve the cage from around the fan and wipe down the blades with soap and water and remove any hair or dirt caught in there and vacuum out the fan motor put the cage back on before plugging it back in.
If these things do not work I don't think ther's much left to clean!!!

Let me know if it works

Spraying the coils seems to have helped. I am testing running it now!
    Thank you,

My dehumidifier smells like its burning when I turn it on. It is about 5 years old, does this mean I need a new one?

Judy, the fan motor or the compressor motor may be failing. It's cheaper and less of a hassle, to replace a 5 year old unit, than it is to repair it.

Hope this helped you.
