Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.
Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.
If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

Hi,
Have you checked The Settings in The Bios.
Your laptop May be set As NTSC Or PAL, displaying on A Different format tv set ?
Try An external Monitor, Or the TV Out if applicable.
If these work in Colour rather than monochrome ( Black And White ) then the fault lies with your svga output on the laptop.

I am assuming that you have tried switching from external monitor output and local monitor. There should be a hot key on the keyboard to switch it. Also, try looking to make sure the driver for the display is up to date. I f it was update recently try rolling the driver back. If you need help with doing any of this post a comment. Hope this has helped some.

Fn F7 probably got pressed (turns on and off the trackpad. probably the dumbest thing to have a hotkey for)

FIX:
I have an acer aspire 5520G and i can relate all too well. It worked fine for about 3weeks (from brand new!!) then one day the screen went blank while trying to boot. I managed to fix it and it worked fine for almost 2years, untill i went to sell it and encoutered the problem again.
The Fix: this is the fix that worked for me; firstly the problem; this seems to be a big problem with acers for some reason, and there are a few variations or confusions about it when people describe their fault. My fault is that when my laptop is off, i press the power button and the green light comes on, a fan starts up and there is hope, but then the fan changes speed slightly and it stays like that indefinatley, without the screen having ever come on, and i mean the computer is virtually dead except the power light and fan, you cannot press ctrl-alt-del or see the screen from an angle or with a torch. the only thing you can do is hold the power button and force a shutdown, so some deep seeded hardware is still working, but it seems the display never starts and the BIOS never loads.
My first fix - i managed to start my computer by pressing the power button, then as fast as i can (hold function button) repeatadly press F5 and F6 ie. with the function button held you are pressing [Black out screen/Restore Screen] and [Switch Monitors]. this usually starts my laptop on the first or second attempt. The first time i did this i was playing around with external monitor cables and connections, and switching monitors and the problem spontaneously fixed itself as mysteriously as it had arrived.
Second time was extremely frustrating, i could still load my computer by pressing F5 and F6 combos but could not get it to become self sufficent. I upgraded my BIOS with the Flash Updater from acer (i found it on the net) and after the second boot attempt, windows vista installed some memory drivers, and the problem was resolved.
if this hadnt worked i would have tried the memory battery fix as above, as my problem definatly seemed bios related.
Hope this helps someone from loosing their hair.
