dvancavage,
Your problem might be missing
codecs. A codec (compressor/decompressor) is used to 'decode' a video or sound. A video practically needs 2 codecs; a
video codec and an audio codec.
To resolve your issue, try installing K-Lite Codec Pack Pro. This will ensure you to play all types of videos and music in your computer. Install the program without changing the settings if you don't know how to change them.
Also, I suggest you un-install any other Media Players that you have and leave
Windows Media Player 11 (upgrade it to 11; it's free!), QuickTime and iTunes. Set Windows Media Player 11 as your default too so you can automatically play all the files you want with WMP11.

Been watching mp4s for a while now, and since the start, only one laptop in my home can play them smoothly. It's an old Compaq laptop.
I have another desktop computer and another laptop whose drivers are fully updated, and I've downloaded quite a few codecs in my attempt to make my MP4 playback less 'choppy'. The laptop and desktop are really fast computers with dual processors. They play everything except MP4 files.
I am hating MP4 format.
So here's what I did:
- Downloaded a bunch of media players, like BS, VLC, ITunes, etc. Still Choppy
- Downloaded a bunch of codecs. Still choppy
- Updated all video drivers. Still choppy.
I'm now ready to give up on this MP4 thing with my high-powered laptop and desktop. When my old and beat up Compaq laptop stops working, I'll have no mp4 player.
Really irritating.
And any help is greatly appreciated.
PS: It is **NOT** a hardware issue.
