I used wireless a few times before using my pc, but recently I wasn't able to do so. It only works by cable now, directly from the service provider. I had a couple of friends take a look at it and they suggested that I try locate the manual (for my HP pavillian dv6000) on the net (since I haven't a physical copy of my own) to see wether the manual can help diagnose the problem, but I thought before doing so, I will check with you guys first.
I now wait in great anticipation for your professional advise.
yours. concerned customer!
First make sure the wireless switch is not set to off on the laptop. Second check the device manager (start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager) and verify that the device is not disabled or in conflict and that the driver is installed (it wont have any red x's or question marks or yellow circles with black exclamation points). I think those models had a bug in the bios that made the wireless stop recognizing correctly. Try updating the bios. You can go to hp's website (support.hp.com) to download latest drivers and bios and flash utility. They also have the service manual that will tell you how to disassemble the unit to get to the wireless card if it needs to be replaced.
