I'm sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing in getting the few channels. I suggest that you unplug the TV to perform a power resetting and then perform auto programming to resolve the issue. Please let me know if the issue persists.
You`re probably getting a on air channel which means that you have to check your cable connectors and splitter if you got any, switch with other sets if you can.
The tuner of the TV is likely bad. Try hooking up a vcr (if available ) and changing channels with it (using video inputs on tv if available).
If you can confirm that the cable is good (by trying another tv) then the problem is with the tuner of the TV- get estimate from repair shop.
Go into the TV's setup screen and make sure its tuning mode is set for "cable" (may say "CATV"). I'm not familiar with this set so I don't know exactly what the screen will say, but there should be some reference to channel setup, TV setup, tuning band, etc. It's probably set on "AIR" now.
Normally, when set for off-air reception, the set works properly for channels 2 through 13, and 14 up don't tune properly. Since you're getting channels up to 19, there may in fact be some kind of tuner problem. If the TV is already set for cable tuning, you may have found why the former owner was freecycling it. But check that tuning mode.
If you do not have problems with picture and sound on all the other working channels, then the problem you are having with 57 & 58 cannot be a short. The problem you are having is that those channels will not tune in properly through your tuner and this is why you get intermittent sound when they are trying to tune in. The sound tunes in easier than the picture. You said that you have programmed the channels again and I am assuming you are talking about the autoprogramming mode. Try to program those channels individually by deleting them and then readding them. If you cannot do that then you need to take the tv back since it is new or have warranty service look at your tuner and setup your tuner by making adjustments to it directly. Good luck and God bless.
In most cases when you set your menu ("tuner section") to cable, the tv will pick up all channels, but if you set it to "off air" or "antenna" (or whatever the other choice is labeled), then the tv will only go up to about channel 50 or 60. Are you using cable, dish, or an antenna on top of your house. If using cable or dish, then go into the menu on your tv and set the tuner to "cable". I am pretty certain that your tuner is NOT currently set on "cable" and that also there are no local "off air" channels in your area on 2 thru 6, therefore, you see snow on these channels. I have repaired hundreds of tv's and I feel very strongly that your problem is in your menu.
