What do I set my CD-Rom Jumpers to in a Dimension 1100

Which is it a Dell 3000 or Dell 1100 ?

The jumper settings on the rear of the DVD drive; set the jumpers to "cable select" mode (if you are uncertain how to set the jumpers, check the documentation that came with your drive or look for a diagram printed on the drive itself). Insert your DVD drive into the selected drive bay and connect the IDE and power cables. Use the screws that came packaged with the drive to secure the component to the drive bay.

DVD+RW DVD

You need a Drive with and ide connector so your choices are fairly limited. Tiger Direct is a very reputable company with great deals on computer parts so get this one from Tiger Direct:

DVD drive bay

yes you should be able to play CD on the DVD reader.
Dimension 2400 have drive slide mounted on the side of the hard drive, cd drive and floppy. they are different for each device. you need the 2 side mount for the dvd. in order to mount them in the Dell.
the drive is inserted from the inside of the box toward the front. The front panel will prevent the device from pop out.
yes, 3 party DVD, CD drive will be shorter and fater that what Dell porvide, but it will work, al long as the opening is accessable.
get the HP DVD driver.

DVD - RW WONT WORK -

Unfortunately optical drives do have a short life span, you can buy a replacement from newegg.com so cheaply these days its not worth messing with the old one.
I have just bought a DVD-RW dual layer OEM (so I had the burning software with it) for a new build I am doing for $28 plus delivery.

I want to upgrade from cd rw to dvd/cd rw

If you are looking to replace the internal drive, then as long as you purchase a drive with the same interface it will work. If you are looking for a USB external drive then any one will work.

The only thing Dell was correct with is it should have +/- signs.
