TV just shuts off. There is no warning message and I turn it back on almost instantly. It takes a minute or two for the picture to come back on. Then it can stay on for another half our or more and shuts down again.
Hope Bob C does not mean computer_Bob who used to be a expert here.
To address your question:
If no error blink code exists (power light or other blinks a specific number of blinks) it likely is a issue in the power supply of the set which usually will give an error blink code of some type.
Common failure reasons include but not limited to:
Lamp
Ballast
Dirt
Yes, dirt inside (dust to be kind) will trigger shutdown etc.
A lamp will usually before it fails give some indication like a dimmer picture but dirty fans and dust inside can also do this.
In our shop if it is dirty inside first thing is it goes out the door and gets a good dose of compressed air--usually looks like a dust storm.
Lamp life is on average 2,000 hours (average user it is 2 years) and generic lamps have a lesser life.
Ballast usually is suspect if several lamps have failed in a shorter period of time but can just fail.
These are my thoughts from working on this and similar sets--what have you tried so far?
First: 3 blinks is "lamp door not properly closed". This requires some explanation: The door itself can become warped from heat from the lamp--known and a class action lawsuit was settled over this issue= heat from lamp can melt door and damage area inside where lamp is. They were repairing this for a while for free even if set not in warranty---that now also I think has ended.
There is a simple way to know if the door is the issue here---look on back of the door (with it removed) and note the small plastic peg there----directly behind the door that peg when door is in place engages a tiny lever.
Engage the lever with something not metal and with door off turn set on--if it does come on DO NOT look directly at the light--DO NOT place outer plate back with no door as it can be melted.
If set comes on the door is the problem and should be replaced--a few people here have told me they just bypassed the switch/lever which for safety reasons I do not suggest doing=all it is really there for is to prevent the set from working if door open or removed.
What one asker here did was remove peg on back of door and wedge lever until engaged--put door and front piece back and used the set that way--again I do not suggest this or even approve of it.
The door in the past by model number can be either ordered from Sony and I have seen replacement ones on EBAY as well.
Simple test to know if the door is the issue or not.

Just repaired one of these for this exact problem... Lamp is most likely defective, which is a Xl2100u lamp Sony p/n# A1606034b about $175.00

Remove the lamp assembly, There will be a screen on the top and bottom of the assy remove all dust from these screens. also check the tube at the top of of the lamp receptical this is an air cooling pathway. reassemble and fire it up. This worked for me and saved some serious coin judging from some of the other solutions I have seen (lamp and balast) ouch!!!
SOURCE: tv turns self off when turned on
Does it blink a certain amount of blinks pause a second or just blink constantly with no pauses? Let me know it will blink a code if its going into protected shutdown. And it will blink constantly for another reason.
SOURCE: WILL NOT STAY TURN ON
Hi,
Its bit complicated problem. Service manual states HV Protection as 10 times blinks.
You need to replace D Board or if you know basic electronics and familiar with TV repair, then check followings..
• Q8014 or Q8013 have shorted replace
along with R8051 on D Board
• IC8005 is damaged (D Board
Hope this info will help you out.

Here is what you need to do.
1.) You need to remove the entire plastic piece below the front of the screen. You most likely will find 3 screws on either side in back that you have to remove.
2.) The grill will not come out easy, pull from one side and then when it starts to come loose from the other side(there are several plastic pegs that hold it in.) Then from the bottom pull out( most of these sets have square plastic tabs at the top that tuck in.)
3.) With the grill removed locate the inspection plate behind it (it usually has 6 screws.) You will have to tilt the grill to the left and on its side as several cables are connected to it--they are held in place with trash bag like ties that you can release to get some room.
4.) With the inspection plate removed you will see a fairly small (about 3 inch square) BLACK PLASTIC BLOCK WITH SIX CONTROLS-usually they are marked with whiteout so someone can tell if they have been adjusted.
5.) You need to look very close at the block with a flashlight----usually the top three controls are FOCUS--don't touch those.
The lower three are usually marked Screen and if you look very close you will see b, g, r(blue green red)
6.)Usually the blue will be on the bottom left--it does vary
7.) Once you locate the BLUE screen control have the set on and turn it down--if the set is shutting down you may have only a few seconds to try to turn it down---usually to the left with the Blue Screen control.
8.) Best way to do this if the set is on is on a video input with nothing connected--you turn the blue down until the set stays on and then very slowly turn it up until you see a slightly blue screen with or without diagonal trace lines----if you get it to turn on this way turn the blue screen back down slowly until the blue screen and trace lines just disappear.
Let me know if you get it to work--Like I said if it is shutting down you may have to slowly turn the blue screen down a few times to get it to stay on.
I do this here for free and if this helps you at all give me a vote here--it costs you nothing.

Usually answered in minutes!
When it shuts off there is a red error blink -- three quick blinks then a pause, then it repeats the pattern.
