Replaced the balast, tv not longer turns on and off but now it has a kind of pulsing picture. Am I looking at a new bulb? a new color wheel ? or some other surprise that I haven't heard about?

  • Anonymous May 01, 2012

The picture was good before I replaced the ballast but the tv would only stay on for a minute and then cycle on and off with no picture. Since the bulb was only six months old I found posts on fixya that suggested trying the ballast. When I turned on the tv after replacing the ballast it has a picture but it is kind of flashing or pulsating color picture. I have not seen that posted as a color wheel or lamp issue. All of that said can I read into your response that if the ballast is bad it may have done damage to the bulb? Thank you for your help.

Lamp is possible especially if the ballast was bad--it powers the lamp.
Color wheel will usually display some issues--high pitched whine or fan like noise---with the lamp removed look where it faces--color wheel is there--any broken or missing pieces and it is the problem---

The wheel is directly connected to the set---set will detect if wheel not moving or moving too slow etc and almost instantly turn the lamp OFF.

all 3 lights blinking means lamp has a fault the service manual says replace the lamp. If you need the service training manual for that model let me know and I will post the link as the training manual has excellent trouble shooting breakdowns for that model DLP

SOURCE: black and white picture only

The color wheel is not the problem. If the spinning color wheel is impaired in its RPMs it will cause picture distortion, not black and white picture. If the color wheel looses any of its color fins, like if it is broken, there will be a loud vibrating noise inside the tv which you did not mention. Also if the color wheel is broken and doesn't spin, the tv will not start up.

The likely problem is on the digital control board or the power supply and should be referred to a local repair shop for repair.

There is an outside chance that you will receive color if you experiment with using all of the different input ports to see if you can find one that will bring back color.

SOURCE: Samsung HLP5674 color wheel problem

If you didn't replace the whole assembly with the color wheel, the sensor on the bracket could have been damaged. The sensor detects the black stripe on the hub assembly of the wheel to sense if it is spinning before lighting the lamp. I learned the hard way and just replaced the color wheel. 8 months later the sensor started failing intermittently and then outright failed and it had me scratching my head for a week trying to figure it out. At first the lamp would light for about 5-10 mins, good picture, and then would go out and all 3 LEDS on the front of the TV would flash. Had to pull plug from wall to get it to restart and the the same thing. After a while it failed altogether and the tv would try to start and shut down. It would restart by itself 2 more times, but the RPMs on the color wheel were way too high...the sensor was trying to read the RPMs and couldn't get a reading. The wheel was ramping up and down. After 3 tries, the tv would shut down with 3 LEDs on the front panel. I replaced the bracket with a new one (new sensor and wire) and all is well. I could not find just the bracket/sensor assembly, had to buy the whole assembly (wheel/bracket/sensor). Hope this helps.

Have a dlp samsung HLT6176S no picture already replaced the bulb still no picture what gives

Remove the lamp and look at the color wheel that faces it.

If wheel is shattered or missing pieces set will know it is not moving or moving too slow and shut set and lamp off.

Not all color wheels when fail make a sound

Samsung p6163wx - lamp sign flashing with a loud noise fan on, no picture. Replaced with a new bulb - did not solve the problem

This set may use a color wheel if it has a lamp. A bad color wheel will make a fan like or high pitched sound.

If the wheel actually shatters (it can) the set will not function and will turn the lamp off.

See photo of color wheel and if you need to know I can tell you how to look at it.

Trying to turn on tv and no picture. bought new

Rulds2008 is probably right. I had the same problem, but have no TV repair shop near me. So since I have experience fixing computers, I decided to repair the TV myself. I initially repaired the Lamp, but the TV still flashed all three lights. Called Samsung and they told me that I might need to replace the ballast, but it would be best to bring it to a repair shop. The repair shop offered to come out and look at it for $150 or bring it in for $120, even though they were about 30 mins away. Ordered both parts on www.Samsungparts.com and got them in three days. Still had the three flashing lights. Took apart the entire TV (googled it on youtube) and vacuumed and dusted the TV and took apart the color wheel (about 20-30 mins). It was completed busted. Found out that if the color wheel is broken, it will not send a signal to the ballast to tell it to start up and power the lamp. So if you have replaced the lamp and/ or the ballast and it does not light up, it is more than likely that it is your color wheel (buy it on ebay or amazon, got it in three days versus a 3-4 week back order on company sites). Also, make sure the power switch on back is being pushed upwards and not downwards or the TV also will not start. Total parts cost me ($400) versus having someone else fix it and charge me double with labor and parts. TV is better than ever. Hope this helps.

How do I remove/install color wheel/balast on a samsung hl-p5063w

We just replaced our color wheel and it took about 2 hours.  We used this site because it was the only one that somewhat resembled our TV http://guides.fixyourdlp.com/samsung/bp96-01579a.php  Our TV had a loud humming noise and no picture.  We also had to replace the bulb.  Hope this helps.

Light Engine?

try removing the lamp and inspecting it if it's not shattered inside ,chances are it's ok and you might have another problem ,possible balast fault, that drives the lamp assy. look for fan operation also.
