Re: Zoom doesn't work
Digigtal Zoom is simply a method of cropping the image in the camera.
The optical Zoon actuates the Lens
This seems to have failed
Check custpmer support for a repair option
Not very hopeful I am afraid - New Camera may be best option

The D3100 doesn't have digital zoom capabilities. The zoom range depends on the lens you have fitted on. The 5.6 sounds like the aperture. The maximum aperture also depends on the lens.
The S3100 does have digital zoom capabilities. Is this the camera you're referring to? Or are you confusing the specs of the two cameras?
If you've tried "add or remove programs" in the control panel and have had no success, try this. Go to "start", "search", and search for Canon Zoom Browser. Delete all entries that come up in the search.
Hi had this problem with my WB100. Zoom would come out then pop back in and say zoom nit not operate normally, please put new batteries in and try again or contact bla bla. What i did when the zoom popped out is i held onto it and didnt let it retract back and turned it back on. It worked after that so i guess the zoom must of been a little forced in when it was in use last in when turned on it wasnt fully going forward. Worked for me so worth a shot
no ideas on how you can get it working.
There is I should think a connection adrift.

But be prepared for a zilch answer- I don't think a 'repair' will come into the equation
