I tried to follow the steps that was listed as the solution. Truth, I didn't understand them. I have the ACS45.2 speaker system and don't know what to do.

Wanted to expand on the problem. There are two volume buttons (up & down) and a power light on top of the main speaker. When you push both together, the power should turn on and off and when on you should be able to adjust the volume. The power button is on continuously (won't turn off) and the volume will not adjust. There is also a subwoofer, although that has it's own volume and seems to work. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with the Altec Lansing acs45.1. The down button to decrease the volume no longer functions, only the button to increase the volume. And I can't power the unit down since both buttons need to be pressed simultaneously to accomplish this. I opened up the speaker and everything looks ok. I've read on another forum that it might be the Electronic Volume Controller IC (PT2256) but I don't know how to check if mine is good and I haven't found a source for one anyway.

the problem is in the board your volume control is defective. Just replace volume control IC PT2256 and it will be ok.

Double check your connections. Still not working fine. Remove the input jack connector and try to touch or hold the tip of the connector, also adjust the volume of the speaker, you should heard loudly the 60 hertz sound of your body signal. Otherwise you have a defective amplifier in the speaker system.
