Yep its a high voltge arc. You may also spell a strange ozone odor.
Turn off the lights and see if you can see it it arking inside the set. Sometimes its fixable by putting silicon over a crack or cleaning off dust but sometimes its inside the High Voltage flyback and it needs to be replaced.

Beware the tube can hold 30kv for months so dont touch the high voltage wiring unless its discarged.

Sounds like you have a high voltage arc if the sound is not coming through the speakers. Possibly the high voltage leads are not pushed in all the way. Be careful! Make sure the set is off and you may also want to ground these leads before you touch them. Youcan get a nasty shock if you don't.

Hissing noise horizontal lines

Hello erl, hi.... the hissing noise is usually caused by high voltage arching, but this is suppose to be soft. if the hissing is unusually loud, the high voltage transformer clip cap may be loose, this may cause the horizontal line you see on the screen. take precaution when dealing with this.... here are steps that may help..

1. unplug the unit. allow around 5 minutes for all voltages inside the unit drops to a safe level.
2. open the back cover. place the monitor face down on a table with a dry clean rug or towel.
3. locate the picture tube. on the top side you will see a wire with a cap at the end.
4. use or wear a cloth glove and feel if the cap is loose. re clip the cap and make sure it is secured.
5. replace the back cover.

D52w20 rce not coming on

hissing noise indicates to me you have a high voltage problemm... likely a flyback. could be a crt or splitter. if its the flyback then the horizontal transistor could have blown. I would not suggest working on this unless you have had some electronic experience.

RCA 52 INCH D52W20B WON'T COME ON

A 1995 60 inch rca good picture and sound. Then it started a cracking noise and a hissing sound, then the picture went blurry. then it was nice picture and sound, then it died. took the back off and turned out the lights. Plugged the tv in and out from the wall socket and there was a sparking noise and a small arc when i plugged it in and out a few times ,at the part that the power plug plugs into. The white part that is beside the white power plug part has thick red wire coming out of it and goes into another plug that has more red wires in it. but the big white part beside the power plug part looks burnt and has black powder on it. that part is probably the problem but maybe not, what it the name of that part and how much would it cost and is it plugged in or soldered.

RCA 32

this problem may occur due to some drysoldering of some components on the mother board...mostly in the power supply section.

TV screen wont turn on but just a loud noise coming from the tv

I think maybe the G-board needs to be replaced. A TV shop will have to repair it. They normally start around $200.00

56" RCA projection TV (FLYBACK related problem)

the base to emitter of the hot will read short on a diode checker/test on ohms it vairies but typically about 50 ohms.e to c, or b to c should have very high resistance. unsolder the collector of the hot. make sure all solder is gone. now test the ohm between your tuner ground & the pad of the hot collector it should read open.
