Simplest solution: back up the data on the drive and repartition it (which will wipe it). Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the file tree or structure of the drive, the configuration files could be corrupt, some program could have stored temporary files in a hidden place that cannot be deleted without making the program delete them, etc. If you are on a mac, spotlight Disk Utility and use it to repartition. If you are on a PC use the search thing from the start menu and find a program called disk management (or something similar to that, you'll know it when you see it.) external drives are annoying. i kick mine into the wall periodically for good measure.

Since you have tried connecting the hard drive (HD) into two computers
(Win7 and Vista) and both of them had the same problem, you may want to
try replacing the cable of the HD.
Another thing, try connecting the HD into a Windows XP computer and see
if same thing will happen. If you're hearing a clicking sound while the
HD is turned ON, I'm sorry to say but the HD is no longer working. That
clicking sound is also called the "Click of Death".
Thank you!

Try disconnecting the usb cable from the drive and take the drive to a quiet place.
Power up the drive and put your ear next to it. Listen for the internal
disk to speed up and then click (which means it's ready). At this point
you should have a solid blue LED on the enclosure.
If not, either the disk is bad, the enclosure's controller is bad, or
the external power brick is bad (put your ear next to the power brick
and if you hear a faint clicking sound, the power brick is bad and you
can order a new one from LaCie for about $16.00.
You rate will be much appreciated!

if you external hdd do not show on other computers, usually it meant that power supply on these casings die... but in this particular case it is possible that power supplied by usb port is insufficient to support data transfer. connect recommended power supply (on the back of this particular model you have usb plug and power plug, power supply is/was sold separately) usually hdd inside is still fine and retain data.
if this did not solve your problem, i would suggest purchase little powered universal hdd craddle, they cost about $15 to $25, remove, hdd from casing and connect to the craddle. data should be then accessible directly from your usb port.
as long as hdd is turning, data is accessible and recoverable, even if disk was wiped off.
