Serger won't sew

I didn't realize my layers were to thick for the machine, and it just stopped working in the middle of trying to cut the edges off. I took the plate off to see if any fabric was stuck, none. I re-threaded the machine and still nothing. Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks!

Now does the motor make any noise like it is trying to work at all, or is the motor not responding?  Does the hand wheel turn manually?  If not, clear all lint and schmutz from the area of the looper arms and lubricate everywhere where metal moves on metal with good quality sewing machine oil. Do not use WD40 or 3-in-1 oil.  Your oil, additionally, should be totally clear like water.  If it is yellow please replace it. If that does not solve your issue, remove the baseplate of the machine and clean again, looking particularly for something that could be jamming the moving parts.  Lubricate.  Let me know what you find, please.

I didn't smell anything or hear anything when it stopped working.

It makes no noise at all. The hand wheel does turn all the way. I have cleaned out all the lint I can and I didn't see any type of fabric that could be jamming it. I was sewing on hot pink cotton, and I've shown a flashlight in there and still don't see anything.

I took my machine in and found I had blown a fuse in my foot pedal. All fixed! Thanks to everyone who helped me!

Is there any smell to the machine?
it's possible that sewing the thick fabric could have caused the machine
to jump time
it would be a good idea to have it serviced at a sewing machine shop

  • when a machine jumps time there won't be any smell unless it's the motor,
have you check the power cord to see if it's plugged into the outlet ?
    is the outlet getting power?
is the foot pedal plugged in correctly into the machine?
there are numerous possibilities of what could be wrong, but taking the machine
in to be check is a good idea.

The power cord is plugged in completely into the machine and the outlet. The outlet is getting power. My other machine is plugged into the same one and works just fine. The power cord is connected to the foot pedal cord, so I'm not sure if that poses a problem. But I am definitely going to have to take it in. Thanks for your help

  • they put fuses in the weirdest places now a days, at least you know that if the serger stops that way again, to check the fuse first.
    thanks for the tip

SOURCE: Sewing thick fabric and machine won't send it through

Sergers are not really meant to sew very thick material. The blades have a maximum amount of range, or thickness that they can reach to cut. If you go outside that range, get ready for a big repair bill! You can break loopers and even the needle plate when you "push" a serger. My advise would be to use you sewing machine for the, "pounding" work. The type of material matters too, A thick Quilt like fabric can be sewn becatuse it's not dense material. A thinner harder denim could max out at 3 layers because of it"s hard finish. If the fabric you're sewing isn't dense like, you could just need new knives.

SOURCE: new sewing machine is squeaking

YOu may have bent the needle. Put in a new needle and re-thread the whole machine. See if that works.

My fabric is too thick. How to set my machine to sew through the 4 fleece layers?

Some domestic machines are not designed to take more than a certain thickness. Your machine may not have the power to deal with 4 layers of fleece so it goes into a safety setting and shows the error message.

My serger won't cut

Sounds like your blades are either dull, misaligned, disengaged or broken. Examine your serger book for how to re-engage the blades. If they are engaged, make sure they are aligned correctly. If that still doesn't help check for damage.

Serger won't chain off a stitch. Stitches won't chain and hold to fabric. Added new needle, rethreaded whole machine. Stitches won't connect to fabric or make a chain.

is it possible that the needles are in backwards?
it's very possible that the machine is out of time & would have to be taken to a sewing machine repair shop to be retimed

Stitches not forming correctly

the material may not be thick enough to make a correct stich, you might try interfacing with the single layer of material & see if that helps

Can't get the Lock Cutter Attachment to work. The right hand cut fabric won't feed through the fabric just won't go through and get cut and over sewn

tally_girl_35.jpg have you got the little silver arm with a gap in it (see photo above mounted over the needle bar? This is essential as the movement of the needle bar going up and down is driving the blades in this attachment.
The walking foot attachment for sewing machines works the same way, you need to place the little arm over the needle bar to make this aftermarket accessory work as its not driven by the sewing machine motor, purely by the movement of the needle bar.

Saying that, I would be suprised if this attachment cut heavy weight fabric or several layers well, like many things made to imitate a purpose built machine (serger) there is no substitute for the real thing. It might be fine to just trim the fabric loose threads off a fabric edge but also you would need to watch that the trimmed bits are going somewhere and not getting into the seam or your machine. On a serger, the blades are working right beside a vertical drop off with a waste tray below and there is a lot of lint and fibres trimmed which quickly builds up. With this attachment, you'd have to manually ensure that the trimmed fibres are swept out of the way.

I hope this helps you to get it working though - 4 thumbs up if so. :-)

I have a Husqvarna serger and when I try to serge and cut through 3 thicknesses of sweatshirt fleece it won't cut. I have replaced the cutter and it still won't cut. The same happens when I sew on polar...

I really need to know what kind of serger you have , if it is the 905 910 or the 936 series take a look at the large headed screw that holds the knife in place. if you are doing fleece it will cause a lot of build up of lint behind this screw and not allow the knife to go all the way up and down causing it not to cut multi layers of fabric, and if this is the case it probably needs to go the an authorized tech for a thorough cleaning
