I have replaced the colour cartridge 4 times on my printer. New cartridge lasts a few months (not a question of ink) and then shows incorrect right (colour) cartridge error. Solution when I referred to manufacturer was to send a new cartridge. The printer is down again. Has anyone experienced the same problem?
After looking all over in regards to this issue..the answer is simple...duct tape..seriously..which is hilarious to me considering i'm from the north and west coast and had recently moved to the south...simply tape the 2 components on the on the left had side of a refilled cartridge and reinsert..the printer will complain about no cartridge being there but will print with a refill fine...it'll work i promise..on a further note being a pc tech ..I've NEVER suggested dell to ANY of my customers..looking more into this matter..the aio series are rebranded lexmarks missing components of a true printer..like a "winmodem" that lacks real hardware in place of using part of the windows kernel..the worst of it these are cheaply manufactured printers..the printer cartridge scam chips inside the printers themselves were definately harder to make then the printers themselves..hope this helps and oh yeah ...

Here is a possible solution to the dell printer BS when I bought replacement cartridge for the black I didn't want or need the color. When I attempted to replace it would say unsupported cartridge on the computer screen and right cartrige error or w/ever it said. who cares . It is a S C A M but if you only need black try this... Take a hammer and smash the printer NO DON"T ... Roofer joke. Seriously though just remove the color cartridge and snap it shut empty with the black " replacement cartridge " snapped in and your good to go in black and white. I bought my replacement cartridge at
( S T A P L E S ) no one has one better. good luck sorry if it doesnt work for you I'm only saying that it worked for me. P.S. Thank you and "DUDE I'M NOT GETTING A DELL"!!

Having the same problem with our Dell 962AIO. Got a low black ink cartridge message and replaced it, then got a right cartridge incorrect error message and had to replace the color cartridge that was 75% still full with a brand new color to get it to work. I contacted Dell technical support and even though our warranty is now off the printer since 12/05 he stated that the two cartridges I was using were not compatible with each other and would cause the other one to fail!!! Mind you here that it is Dell that is supplying me with these cartridges. When I have had a bad cartridge, they just ship me out another one. Well guess what, the replacement one is a refill from what I can decifier even though the original one I paid full value for was not! The refill and the not refilled cartridge are not compatible together and will eventually cause a problem. I was told by Dell technical support that if you are using color ink cartridge M4646 then a black ink cartridge M4640 should be used with it. I have been getting J5566 (good cartridges)and then getting M4640 replacements when there is a problem. On Dell web page it says the black should be #T5480 / color #T5482 which you don't get either of those if you order! IT'S A SCAM to get you to keep forking out $20+ per cartridge when you may be getting refills that won't work anyways!!!

I'm not sure if this will solve every cartridge error but what solved mine was that the brand new cartridge was giving me an error. the old color cartridge before that was giving me an error as well, so i tried cleaning the metal contacts inside the printer where it detects the cartridge with a dry towel. there was a ton of ink on there blocking the contacts, and when i put the cartridge back in, VIOLA! it worked perfectly. so that could be one solution.

I THINK THAT DELL PRINTERS ARE PIECES OF ****. IT IS ******** THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY "DELL" PARTS TO REPLACE ON "DELL PRODUCTS" ALSO, THESE ASSHOLES HAVE TO CHARGE FOR EVERYTHING. THEY WON'T EVEN HELP YOU WITHOUT TRYING TO **** YOU DRY OF MONEY. IF YOU HAVE A MINOR FUCKEN QUESTION, THEY TELL YOU TO SIGN UP FOR A PROGRAM AND PAY. ASSHOLES, THEY CAN TAKE THEIR **** AND SHOVE IT UP THEIR ASSES! I'M IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET MY DELL PRINTER TO PRINT A DOCUMENT OFF THE INTERNET, I JUST REPLACED THE BLACK INK CARTRIDGE ONLY AND IT PRINTS A TEST AND ALIGNMENT PAGE, BUT NOT A WORD DOCUMENT THAT I DESPERATELY NEED TO MAIL OUT ASAP!! And I cannot find out how to fix this ****! I think I'm going to get a hammer.....

I will tell you the solution to Dell cartridge error problems and whereby Dell insists that you can only buy cartridges from them (at approx. £20 a go)and that if you dare to refill one you will get "unsupported cartridge" error msg. Do what I am doing now (after owning a Dell AIO 810 for about 6 Months) I am looking in a catalogue for a new printer to purchase tomorrow - and aint gonna be a Dell. Oh by the way, I have yet to even see a compatable cartridge on the shelves for Dell. Nope sorry Dell, u wont get another penny off me for your scam and I wont purchase another Dell product ever again - THAT'S the solution to your problem folks, bye bye.

This is a Dell 962 All-in-one printer.
Hello yellow hair,
Right on the money! This is what I have suspected, a clever scam. How complicated can this be...cartridge consistently doesn't work in printer, either something wrong with the cartridge, or something wrong with computer. So I have had my printer replaced after complaining long and loud, and guess what...right cartridge error. I see that I have the 4646 colour & 4640 black. The colour cart. is new, I'm printing as much as I can before it goes. You are saying that the web site says use a T5480? Hmmm. What the heck's going on here? And can you tell me where you got a J5566? Thanks and best of luck.
M.
yellow hair,
That should read something wrong with the cartridge or the printer, not the computer, (and not that it is any piece of work either).
M.
I have the same problem !
Oh and Duck tape - will not work because the print is set (by Dell) to recognise only Dell printer carts.
The printer cartridge jet is different on dell carts.
just buy dell carts as cheap as posible to avoid the hassle of not being able to print in colour
Tiger1020x ... if I tape over the contacts it prints - but only in black. It complains (like you say) about the cartridge not being there but lets me continue, but doesn't use the 'missing' colour cartridge. I've tried taping over the 2 right hand contacts instead, and I get the same thing - likewise if I tape both pairs of contacts. Oh, and when I put a photo cartridge in (which goes in instead of the black one), I get the same missing cartridge error, but it won't let me carry on and print - just keeps showing the error over and over again. This really makes it look like a scam as it means you can only print in black unless you buy two cartridges. And one more thing - I got this error first when I was using a copy cartridge, so I bought a proper Dell one. But now I get the error with the Dell one as well. Like y'all say, DON'T BUY DELL!
