The player disc door will not open, nor will the VCR eject button work. The word "safe" appears whenever we try to open the DVD disc door, or eject the VCR tape.

I have this problem also, but am still looking for a permanent solution. It appears that this is a safe mode to prevent children from messing with the unit. I don't know how I activated it or how to deactivate this mode. I have found that all functions, including DVD and VHS Tape eject work normally from the remote. Use of the remote will give you complete control until the safe mode can be deactivated.
I just spoke to Insignia. They advised to unplug the unit for one minute, then plug in. If this does not clear the problem, the unit will have to be returned to the store for replacement. You should try unplugging the DVD player from its power source then plugging it back in. Now try to open it and if that doesn't work than you'll probraly have to take it apart to get the disk out but sometimes the DVD players can get worn out or if you have a cheaper DVD player it might just be freezing up on you. I have had these problems before. I just took the DVD player apart to get my disk and then trashed it.
Try resetting the unit. Push and hold the on/off button for 10+ seconds. --or-- Look for a reset button behind the drop down door, and gently depress it with a pen point for a couple of seconds. If this does not work, try calling Panasonic.

I imagine you have checked the disk for scratches top and bottom, if so you can purchase a cd/dvd lens cleaner cdrom as the laser may need realigning and cleaning.
There should be a button on your remote labeled "safe." Press that, and it will turn the safe mode off. It's on the second row from the bottom on my remote.
