My unit will not read a disk. I have tried cleaning the lens with a dry cotten swab this did not help. It does not appear that the laser is working on the unit.

Re: Will not read disk
If you can go into the player then check to see if ribbon cable is attached. If it is ok then probably see if laser move by sticking something in the lock mech. that starts the disc to move and if it doesnt moves then throw away, cause is not worth buying new one.

hi there.
it might just be a bit of dust on the inside laser. Step 3 Laser Lens Cleaning
Locate the lens on the disc drive.
Make sure that there is no dust on or near the player and area you are working on. ...
Dip one end of a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.
Lightly dab the swab on the lens. ...
Let the lens dry before replacing the top plate of the DVD player.
or just buy your self a disc cleaning laser disc.
How do you clean the laser on a DVD player?
To maintain your DVD player, occasionally unscrew the player's case, so you can get at the lens to clean it. You need a screwdriver, canned air or a soft brush, a foam swab or camera-lens cleaner, and lens cleaning fluid from a camera store
Wet a cotton swab with eyeglass cleaner and GENTLY buff the laser lens ( The little clear unit on the laser pickup/reader. Then dry off with another swab. If you can get a can of "Dust-off" compressed CO2, try a couple sprays of that towards the Disc reader.
Will it read any cd's at all? If not then most likely the lens is dusty/dirty which is even more common if it has been smoked around or if the lens has been touched. If on a laptop then all you need to do is get a cotten swab lightly moistened with rubbing alcohol & clean the lens. If this is an internel cd drive on a pc you might want to try opening the drive & cleaning the lens & applying a little 3 in 1 oil to the rails the lens moves along. "Has worked for me many many times on lots of drives" If your not comfortable doing this than you may just want to replace the drive as they are fairly cheap on http://www.newegg.com but if the drives bad it wouldn't hurt to at least try fixing it.
Try cleaning the lens yourself. Before taking drastic measures as replacing stuff, try cleaning the lens on the DVD/CD Drive. You will need to open the unit and also open the DVD/CD case. Make sure you do this while the unit is unplugged from a power source. Locate the lens that reads a dvd/cd. Now get a cotton swab and moisten it with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and gently rub the lens clean...use the other dry end of the cotton swab to rub it as well. Try not to use too much alcohol on the swab and not too much force when rubbing. Let it dry for a minute or 2 and screw the unit back into 1 piece. Moisture, cigarette smoke, insence smoke, and dust can cause a barrier between the DVD/CD and the reading lens and by doing this you will either fix the unit or know that it is a problem that will need replacing. Good luck!e lens yourself manually
The non-technical answer would be that the lens needs to be cleaned. This is the first step for this type of problem. There are many things that can get the disk drive lens dirty like smoke, incense, dust, moisture. Open the unit and open the DVD cover. You will see the lens that reads a DVD. Get a cotton swab (the ones for cleaning out ears) and some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and moisten the cotton swab with the alcohol (moisten not soak) and gently (I mean, do not push hard or scrub hard) rub it on the lens. Now with a dry cotton swab, do the same. Let it dry for a minute (longer if the swab had more alcohol and it might have dripped down) and close the unit. Now try to play DVDs and let us know if it worked. Thanks.

You can press the O (back) button. If the discs are not reading you may need to clean the lens of thelaser with a cotton swab. Lightly dampen the tip of the swab with rubbing alcohol and swab the lens. Then use the dry tip to dry the lens. Try it see if it helps.
If a disc wont spin or start to spin is an indication that the lens is not focusing on the serface of the disc. Try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc. If that does not work, clean the lens manually with a damped cotten swab with alcohol and see if that helps. If it does not, it needs an alighnment of the tracking / focus offsets or gains and your going to need special equipment to do that alighnment. it most likly will not be worth the expense. Good Luck
