Refrigerator light wont work, even with a new bulb

Whirpool side by side, model GD5SHAXNS00, Ser. SR2733663, the freezer light is working okay, but not the refrigerator light, I changed the bulb with a new one but still not working, this ref is only 4 years old, this unit freezes and cools okay no problem. Could it be the switch that opens and closes when you open the door??? Thanks

bought a new bulb, no luck, but OLD bulb worked for a month after re-installed. must be a short somewhere in the system. any suggestions on where or how to find/solve?

Most likely the door switch.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid Side by side refrigerator/freezer

when is the last time you cleaned the condenser coils the areas you describe are supposed to be hot there is a loop there to keep the door gaskets dry but should not be too hot pull the fridge out check to see if the fan is running on the compressor then unplug the unit and clean the coils the only other thin that will make it super hot if there is a leak in the low side of the system and has drawn air in see if cleaning the coils fixes it first and we will go from there

SOURCE: refrigerator not cooling.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem could be either:

  • evaporator fan/blower is faulty; or
  • air passgaeway blocked or vent is blocked or closed.
The refrigerator section gets its cold air from the freezer. If the freezer is working then the frozen air would have to be drawn to the refrigerator side by the fan. If the fan is not working or the air passage way is blocked, then no frozen air would be moving towards the refrigerator side. result would be as you described.

In some instances, it could be the thermostat of the refrigerator but this would be least likely.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Whirlpool runs, but freezer not freezing and frig not freezing

If the compressor is running but the unit is not cooling you may have lost the refrigerant.  See if the condenser coils at the back or bottom are hot.  If they are only warm then the refrigerant is low and can be recharged.  Service tech should check for leak in coolant system.

SOURCE: freezer cool fridge not

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck! P.s Please don't forget to rate my solution Thanks! Mike

i would alssume(knowing about this refrig) that the leectronic control board hasgone bad. the board is located behind the unit next to the compressor, inside a white housing, if you rmeove this board yull probably see a "burn" on one or more ofthe resistors, this is what controls the lighting in refrig sect, not affecting the cooling but only lights
