Question about HP 290 Color Copier

2 Answers

Scanner failure I have an error message of "Scanner Failure" when I try to make a copy. Everything else seems to work fine. The lights are on, I can select print quality, quantity, size, etc., and when I press the button to start copying, I hear the ink cartridges moving, the light comes on under the glass, but then the error message comes up and nothing else happens. The scanner does not move across the glass, and no paper comes out. I am able to change ink cartridges, and the test page prints out just fine. I have tried turning it off and on again many times. I have unplugged from the wall and left it unplugged for varying lengths of time, up to several days, but it won't reset. I called HP and they said the unit is discontinued and there are no parts, either. A local repair shop refused to even look at it because I can buy a new one cheaper than they can fix it. I know new ones are cheap, but I think they are made cheap, too, and this copier was not cheap. I paid $360 for it 4 years ago, and don't want to give up on it until I have exhausted all options. My husband (who fixes everything around here from electronics and appliances to cars and tractors) wants to take it apart and see if he can get the scanner to move again. Do you have any suggestions as to what he can look for or concentrate on, or things he can try? Or is it a lost cause?

hp 290 scanner error . clean mirrors, lift black scanner box. you will find a plastic strip at far end of box on the base. use distilled white vinegar and water diluted. spray onto scott towel and clean plactic strip. lighty. clean all ribbons lightly. also look at little motor sensor thing in rear left hand corner. that has a plastic wheel on it. clean that also very carefully. all this has to be done with top glass off. use the vinegar and water to clean everything. my unit is now back to normal.

I have been finding that scanner failure when the light is still working is usually a dirty scanner. Disasemble and clean the mirrors with windex. No job for a novice, but what have you got to lose at this point.

My hp printer 6110 officejet all in one keep giving message scanner failure when i want to print something

Please make sure that the printer is connected to a wall outlet and not to a surge protector because surge protector distributes the total electric supply equally to each and every device connected to that surge protector. Printer might work and might not with a surge protector but it will always work fine with a wall outlet till the hardware of the printer and power chord, adapter are working fine.

some times scanner failure error comes if it is not getting enough power supply. So if it is connected to a surge protector then I will suggest you to disconnect it and connect it directly to a wall outlet.
Now scan or copy any document and see if something happens.

If not the do check while you press scan or copy button the scanner light is moving or not?
If scanner light is not moving then do a hard re-set.

Hard Re-Set :
- disconnect power chord from the back of the printer and then from wall outlet or surge protector.
- wait for 40 secondsand then connect the power adapter to wall outlet and then to the back of the printer. The try to scan or copy....still not working then check if the scanner bulb is glowing or not?

If scanner bulb is not glowing and if you dont hear any noise while you press scan or copy...then printer hardware has gone bad and you need to replace the printer

My HP Photosmart C5240 will print from computer but will not scan or make copies.

Is there any error message displayed on the control panel of the printer just like one of the following:
Scanner failure, power off and on
Scanner System Failure
Scanner failed, cannot make copies or fax
Scanner failure. Unable to scan, copy, or send a fax
Scanner failure, cycle power

You may want to try following these steps:
1. Check if the scanner light does turn on when you initiated the scanning process, if not you need to reset the product.
2. Try using your other electrical outlet because your AVR or Surge Extension may not be providing enough voltage for the printer.
3. Try using dirty cycle, meaning you need to directly cut the power of your printer by pulling of the power cord from the rear side of your printer and wait for about 30 seconds before inserting again and turn it on.

If all these steps do not improve your printer functionality, you may want to call the HP online help and ask for replacement.

I keep getting a "Scanner Failure" error message every time I try to make a copy. I have tried all the trouble shooting the HP manual suggests but still no luck. Anyone know how to get rid of this...

This series of HP all-in-one units have a common problem that, over time, the exposure lamp. which is florescent, goes dim. The scanner looks for the right amount of light, and if it doesn't see it, it gives you the scanner failure. In some rare cases, you can dismantle and clean the mirrors and lens in the scanner, but most of the time it doesn't work.
There are no parts available for this unit.

Message says "Scanner Failure" and "Unable to scan or copy"

Obviously its scanner error, the whole scanner assembly needs replacement. It could be the bulb or the scanner board, but upon replacing it needs both.

Officejet 7310: Scanner Failure

If you get a "Scanner failure" message then the problem is the motor itself. Notice how the motor works fine when the scanner is moving slowly, like copies or faxing with the original laid on the glass. HOWEVER, the scanner failure comes up when you use the automatic document feeder on top. Why? Because the scanner assembly has to move to the other side of the printer at high speed to get into position, and it's the high speed movement that triggers the error on the printer. The motor is expensive, part number Q3450-60003. Many other models use the same motor, maybe you could find one cheap somewhere and swap the motor?
