How to change out a magnetron on whirlpool model # mh2155xps-3

There are two thermal switches, a high voltage capacitor, a double diode, the transformer and the magnetron itself that could be the problem . I am going to say straight up that you could get electrocuted if you dont know what to do here. To test:

HV TRANSFORMER

Remove lead wire.

Measure the resistance of the winding using an ohm meter

Primary winding 3 ohm (approx.)

Secondary winding 100 ohm (approx.)
Filament winding 0 ohm (approx)
HV CAPACITOR Remove lead wire Measure the resistance using an ohm meter set to R*1000
Terminal to terminal should momentary indicates several ohms but gradually increases to infinite.
Terminal to case should show infinite.

MAGNETRON
Remove lead wire. Install the magnetron gasket in the correct position. Check that the gasket is in good condition.
Measure the resistance of the filament terminals. Normal magnetron should be less than 1 ohm.
Measure the resistance between the filament terminal to chassis. Normal magnetron should be infinite.

HV CAPACITOR

Remove lead wire

Measure the resistance using an ohm meter set to R*1000

Terminal to terminal should momentary indicates several ohms but gradually increases to infinite.
Terminal to case should show infinite.

Yea there is a fuse behind the control panel. Remove vent loover then remove srew that holds control panel it will lift up & out the fuse will there somewhere. good luck

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

In some cases, you then have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it.

depending on how old this unit is the magnetron is usually covered under a warranty and should be done by a service tech

Normally it's bad connections or "ring cracks" on the connections on the circuit board.

This assumes the display glass is not broken, which would necessitate a new control board.

(Note that a dark spot on the display glass is normal)

And it assumes that the unit was not hit with a surge, or needs other repairs, which we do nationwide for $39.95 in most cases.

Make sure the switches are connected EXACTLY as the original ones, maybe one was connected incorrectly. It also can be the controller board.

It has a problem in the high voltage which should only be repaired by an experienced technician for safety. On some models the magnatron has a longer warranty than just one year. Will have to check your manual. High voltage parts are magnatron, capacitor, diode, and transformer. If it isn't under warranty it's almost better to buy new due to repair costs on microwaves. May be worth at least having it checked by a technician.
