Can't format disc

I have a Samsung camcorder DC171.
Have endless problems formatting discs.
Fuji discs (-R) could be formatted and finalised but unable to play on DVD player.
Likewise, Sony (double layer -R) formatted and finalised , unable to play on DVD player.
One sony disc was successfull formatted and finalised and able to play.

Have rung up for technical help which was of no help.

I guess the DVD player that you are using is incompatible of playing DVD -R
Please check if it can.

Windows 7 allows you to format DVD without the need to install a third-party utility.
Just 5 easy steps to format DVD-RW in windows 7!
Step 1. Insert the DVD-RW disc into a DVD burner drive. Make sure that your drive has the ability to write DVD-RWs, otherwise, you won't be able to format, reformat, or write new data the disc.

Step 2. Format the existing data. If the DVD-RW has data on it, you may first need to erase what's there. Click "Start"->"Computer". then right click on the DVD-RW icon. In the toolbar, click "Erase this disc" and follow the instructions.

Step 3. Access the "Burn files to disc" window. This appears when you either insert a blank disc or double-click the blank disc in the computer window. If no window appears automatically after erasing the disc contents, eject and re-insert the now blank disc into your drive to prompt this window to appear.

Step 4.Select the format you want to use. You have two options when it comes to formatting a DVD-RW in Windows: "Like a USB flash drive" (a.k.a. Live File System) or "With a CD/DVD player" (a.k.a. Mastered). What you choose depends on how you intend to use the disc.

Step 5.Finish the formatting process. Once you've selected your formatting method, the drive will prepare the disc. This may take a few moments. After it's finished, you'll be able to start adding files to the disc.

Format error when i finalise the disk

If a FORMAT ERROR message is displayed, then the inserted disc is not formatted or it is recorded in a different format not useable by the camcorder. If using a DVD-RW or DVD+RW, format the disc prior to use. Otherwise, use a different disc.

If the disk has been finalised, it cannot subsequently be formatted. If it has been formatted, then it had not been finalised.

Dvd to prints

You can either
1. Transfer the still pictures from the camcorder to the PC, and then, either
1.1 use your PC software to print the pictures, or
1.2 use an online photo processing lab to print the pictures for you.
OR
2. Take the disc from the camcorder to a local photo printing shop and ask them to print the pictures you want printed.

But first ...
before you can transfer pictures or video from your Canon DC210 to your PC you need to finalise the disc in the camcorder.

You also need to make sure that the DVD drive on your PC is capable of reading a DVD-R, DVD-R DL or DVD-RW format as these are the only disk formats that the DC210 will handle. Not all PC DVD drives can read these formats.

To finalise the disk you must have the power adapter connected to the camera, plugged into a wall socket and turned on. Then, switch on the camera, put it into playback mode, Press 'Func.', select main menu, select 'disk operations', select 'finalise'. Don't move or shake the camera or switch it off whilst the finalising step is underway - this could cause problems.

Once finalising is complete, take it out of the camcorder and then follow steps 1.1, 1.2 or 2 above.

Good Luck.

Cant transfer footage from Canon DC201 onto computer (and eventually internet) Do I need specialist software to take video from DVD to computer?

You don't need specialist software to take video from DVD to computer.

One of two things has gone wrong
1. Your PC cannot read the -R DVD format, or, more likely
2. You have not finalised the disk.

You must finalise the disk in the camcorder before putting it in the PC. To finalise the disk you must have the power adapter connected to the camera, plugged into a wall socket and turned on. Then go to the main menu, select 'disk operations' and you'll see an option to finalise disk. Don't move or shake the camera whilst the finalising step is underway.

Once finalising is complete, put the disk into the PC.

Have you finalised the disc ? Go into the menu and where you format the disc there is an option to finalise. It should then play on your laptop. Hope that helps ;)
