Are you trying to load the Operating System? If so why are you partitioning the drive. Just load the operating system onto one big contiguous area which would be drive c. When the operating system comes up and checks your drive, delete all the partitions so that you will have one big contiguous partiton.

Vista as other OS have a limitation on partitions, for Vista is 4, so you cant add another one.
The easiest solution is you to backup your recovery partition and then delete it.
You can use "Ghost" or other similar programs to copy that partition.

Expanding partitions does not make your hard drive bigger..it just rearranges space.
The best solution in this case is to purchase a bigger hard drive for your laptop.
SOURCE: Hi i take dell laptop with 320 gb hard disk &
you cannot split the partition while its in use.
THE FOLLOWING WILL ERASE THE ENTIRE DRIVE.
put the OS dvd into the machine
power on
hit F12 key when the dell logo appears
select the cd/dvd drive.
the machine will now boot from the OS disk
follow the instructions until it asks where to install windows.
At this point you can split the disk into as many partitions as you like providing you choose a partition of at least 30Gb for the OS to be installed on.
