T.V. Convergence Yesterday the left side of my Pioneer Elite Pro-99 TV was blurry and had separated red and green around objects. I did a convergence from the main menu and it improved. The problem is that it doesn't hold. I have re-converged at least 10 times and it is ok for awhile. It probably needs to be converged from the back of the set but I do not know how to do that. The techs that Pioneer recommended want $140/half hour just to come and diagnose. Fixing the problem is extra. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Left side of sreen is blurry/halo effect. Right side is normal. Magic focus stops when it gets to green and flashes green number 3 on bottom left of screen.

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I just turn my tv on and it it has red and green outlines around everything and the picture is a bite wavy. work find yesterday

Green colors are seperated from rest

You might have a bad green convergence output IC either loose from the circuit board or open internally OR shorted. Stargazer

It cut off and won't cut back on. Pro-99 refrence projection monitor reciver. It cut off in the middle of a movie. Prior to it cutting off it was making a faint chirping sound. The sound got more frequent, then the picture went dead. The standby light remains on, but it will not turn on. If I hold the main power button in, it makes a few loud chirps then clicks off back into standby mode. Any assistance would be greatly appericated.

pioneer pro99 standby problem I recieved this tv with a standby problem when powered on it starts to come on you can hear high voltage start then it will go from a green light right to the red. I've hit all of the solder connections but same thing. Could you tell me where to start? Thanks

John, im sorry to have to tell you, you have the normal convergence break down, and any adjustment is not going to fix the problem. The Convergence ICs are bad in this set, and both should be replaced at once, as you do not want to pay another repair price 6 months down the road. In these sets there are no user replaceable parts, unless you know how to work on solid state printed circuit boards and understand about the TV safety factors involved.
