It makes a cracking sound like a bugzapper every couple of min
I just got it 2 days ago the first time i heard the zap it lasted for about 2 seconds after that it makes that sound every couple of minutes is that supposed to happen
I have the same problem. It's not constant, but happens from time to time. I haven't used it in a few years though, and just got a new filter, etc. I just cleaned the unit out as well. I'd be happy to hear how you get rid of this cracking noise. It hasn't kept me up yet, but I imagine it will

Mine really gets my attention when snapping and flashing at night. At times a dozen or more cracks in a row. Reminds me of a string of Chinese firecrackers, but not quite as loud. It might be a good thing but definitely not for the light sleeper. Possibly it's too sensitive. With the flashing and cracking display I was expecting to see a big bug caught in the unit. I can't believe it takes that much sparking and noise to vaporize dust in the air.Mine really gets my attention when snapping and flashing at night. At times a dozen or more cracks in a row. Intuitively, I glean it zaps when you turn it on only if you are a bug. Zapping is caused by the bug encountering the zapper. Otherwise, it would zap you even if you were not a big bug, simply because you were in close proximity.
It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The bug zapping sound is from dust particles in the air, that's being pulled thru the unit. However, it should not being doing in continuously (unless your home is really dusty), it may simply need cleaning. Cleaning the unit, about once a month is recommended.
If it's only doing it for a short period of time, it's picking up dust in the air and zapping it like a bug zapper. If it's continually doing it, there may be a short where the filter touches the electrodes or just misplacement of the filter.
If the the "zapping" noise you hear is intermitant (like a Bug Zapper) it's probably dust that the air cleaner is picking up from the household air. .If that's the case, there's nothing to worry about, it's doing it's job.
If the "zapping" sound is continuous, then the unit may need cleaning, as it may be clogged with dust & lint.
you need to turn it off and remove plates, put in kitchen sink and spray with windex and dry with paper towels, now clean the bottom of the three plates too.
before
you reinstall the plates look down inside you will see three thin lines
of metal, make sure there is no lint or dust on them, reinstall and let
set for five min. to allow any windex that might still be wet then turn
on low for a couple of min.then go to medium
There isn't one. The reason why Sharper Image went out of business is because the Ionic Breeze was proven to be ineffective product and harmful to use in some cases based on Consumer Reports data as well as data from the EPA. They sued Consumer Reports, lost the case, and had to pay all the legal bills.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to making decision on all ionizers by the end of the year. It's quite possible that no one will be selling them anymore.
There is thread I left in the Ionic Breeze section about the EPA data on ionizers and the harmful effects of using them as well as a link about what happen to Sharper Image.
This product should have been regulated a long time ago. Orek and few others are going to be pulling the plug on them real soon.
Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. Does this one have the metal bars that pull out? I have a ionic pro and when it gets dirty it will emit small sparks where the dust connects from one bar to the other. It also has a pull up wand that cleans the wire that help build the charge. If this is the system that changes the charge on the ions to attract them to plates, you will see small sparks when it becomes dirty. Mine always let me know by the sparking sounds it makes.
I had the same problem and found that the mylar on the tabs at the bottom of the plate assembly was damaged (torn). I was able to repair the part myself using mylar tape. This solved the sizzle problem. I
