The camera tuns ON fine and display says "Access" then it switches off. If I start the camera in Setup mode it will remain on, but anyonther mode that requires the lens to move, automatically switches the camera off!
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: P73 switching off!
This is most likely a weak battery. Be sure to charge at least 14 hours before using rechargeable batteries. If alkaline, replace with fresh ones. The zoom motor uses more power that any other features.

You may try using any another compatible Battery pack in the Camera to ensure if the issue is not causing due to the Battery. Actually, when the Camera is switched to the "Picture or Camera" mode then the power consumption increases spontaneously. So, if the Batter is not holding sufficient charge to cater the power need of the Camera in the Camera mode then it'll automatically turn off. However, if the issue persists with spare Battery also then you may try resetting the Camera to the original factory settings by pressing and holding the Reset button for 30 seconds. Otherwise, it's required to get the Camera to resolve the hardware issues.
I almost have the same problem. My camera automatically switches between playback and camera mode quickly only for a while,then it remains still in the playback.When it remains in playback,if I toggle the playback/camera switch few times,it may work for some shots but again the problem begins. (http://www.fixya.com/ThreadAsker.aspx?thid=2918658) Did you find any solution?
Have Sony DSC-P73 with exact problem. Only turns on in SETUP mode and when switches to all other modes camera shuts off usually with lens extended. Have tried new batteries - new memory stick - new everything and nothing helped. I just took out the batteries and attached the AC ADAPTER and all works perfectly now so problem is with either batteries - battery compartment or battery connections. As long as you do not need a "PORTABLE" camera, using AC Adapter solves this problem :)
Your camera has problem in Lens mechanism. If Lens doesn't open properly, camera will not show picture at all. There would be Loading Motor section demaged in Lens mechanism and it needs to be replaced to work camera OK.
Now come to blue screen in playback mode, This model doesn't have internal memory, so you need memory stick/ card to see previously taken pictures.
With the radio turned off and displaying the time, hold the MODE switch until the time display flashes (about 2 seconds). Release the MODE switch then quickly, use the TUN (up) to set hours, TUN (down) to set minutes.
camera ccd is / has failed - also possible , lens
iris is stuck closed ( on monitor , can see very
faint snow noise against black background - check
if iris opens , by shining penlight into lens );
Of course there is a chance that contact spray (non greasy) can solve the problem. If not, there is also an ultimate option to change the control switch block part number: 147838411
If you need more info please advice

Sounds like you may have a problem in the auto iris curcuit or the auto settings was switched to manual and the lens is closed. Check first to see that the lens is setup in auto mode. If it is then the auto iris as i said before is bad or stuck closed unless the small caps in that curcuit went bad as they always do after a few years. Good Luck
