Question about Hitachi 42V715 Rear Projection Television

Discolored oval I purchased the 42V715 in October 2004 (over 2 years ago) and recently I have noticed an oval in the picture in the center towards the bottom about 12-15" in diameter. It is not noticeable unless there a lot of whites on the screen, but when the screen is mainly white this oval has a yellowish tint. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?

Cleaned it out. Still having the same problem. The lens inside was very dusty but the picture coming out of it has this yellow oval. You can see it in the lens. The lamp looks OK. Service tech says it's probably the light engine and sez it'll be 800-1000 bucks to fix.

Thanks for all of the advice. After calling Hitachi 4 times they finally turned me over to Customer Relations and after the techs estimate of $770 to replace the LE they agreed to pay for half of the part ($300) and ship it to me if I wanted to do the repair myself. Got my TV back from the tech today and Hitachi had the part on my doorstep today (2 days to ship) awesome! So after $300 for the LE, $12 for a service manual, $69 for the tech to tell me it was the LE and 2 hours of sweat on my part my TV is now working correctly again. Not too bad. Thanks again!

Similar problem but mine appears as 2 streaks extending from the bottom [where it is wider] upward.

Open the set and see if there is anything inside the set, like cobwebs, ect. Also look down into the tubes while the set is on to see if there is anything floating around inside the fluid. My educated guess is that it needs cleaning. Good Luck PS Please do not forget to rate this thread

NO NO NO. Call Hitachi, there is an extended warranty on the light engine, as Hitachi is aware of this problem. Sounds like if this guy was an authorized tech, he is ripping you off. Its a factory recall! Please call hitachi ASAP. If this guy is an authorized Hitachi dealer, call him back and tell him you know about the recall and tell him you are going to report him to Hitachi. Do not wait on this as there is a limit to the recall. Good Luck

Call hitachi customer support and keep on going until you hear the right answers after talking to at least three people (be patient) you should get them to give you a full letter of concession for the light engine; labor and the part cost as far as the industry goes ,they are relatively liberal in their consumer relations when it comes out of warranty products the replacement light engine costs roughly 400-500 dollars it is an improved model with different cooling features one of the panels is marked on your light engine a safe guess is that you bought it during cold weather we are seeing a lot of lcds going bad and not showing up for a year, sometimes longer on other transmissive lcd engines if you can pay for the labor ie: $ 300, hitachi may reimburse you a good approach is have an authorized servicer write you an estimate which should cost less than $100 then approach hitachi customer service with the information

You have some reason to believe it will not?

Some history for you---several years ago Hitachi began along with others to have issues with the optical light engines.

With a mix of high heat from a lamp into the engine (it has a blue,green and red section inside---guess what? BLUE is the first place that gets the heat and is damaged----minus blue and you have red and green which equals YELLOW.

Several of their sets made about 6 years ago (research 50v500) had exact same issues and were settled in a class action lawsuit.

The issue can but does not always affect the entire screen.

The question really is: This set really worth the part and labor cost for the repair?

On that earlier model I replaced under warranty over 40 of the engines. Also Sony and others have had similar issues some of which were settled in court.

Wavy distortion of the pictures

Hello!

That can be repaired, the vertical and the horizontal that regulate the voltage towards the projection maybe lessen or fulty. you can let the service man/service center repair this. these not much cost you, that is very cheap part and a minimum labor cost.

Additional information is required for us to assist. Can you better describe what you mean by "poor image"? Are the colors separated? Is the picture out of focus? Are the colors wrong?

Yellow spots

I have been told by a local repair person that Hitachi might replace the light engine at no cost because it is such a big issue... has anyone hear about this... I am going to contact them directly also.

Blue discoloration

I have replaced alot of these light engines for this problem. Yesterday I received a letter from Sony saying they are going to give an additional warranty to have the optics replaced. I just checked, your model is one of them and Sony is replacing the optic block under an extended warranty, regardless of the purchase date, until the end of October 2008. Contact Sony for an Authorized Service Center in your area or go to this site to read about it: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=185&mdl=KDSR60XBR1 Have this repair done on your set and it should save you about $1300.00 to $1500.00 on the repair. Sanyo DS24425 Intermittent Discoloration

It seems like this problem would have to be with the picture tube itself, although I have never run into this symptom in over 30 years of servicing TV's. If the CRT is still in warranty I would get it checked out. Otherwise it probably not be worth repairing. If you end up replacing the set, check out the Toshiba 24" model. I have had good luck with that model in the past.
