When you put a card reader to the computer, or when there is a card reader in the computer you need a driver that came with the card reader or the computer. To read from a camera, you need a driver that came with the camera. More and more, the interfacing of cameras becomes standard, so if you ever installed a camera driver it could be other cameras can communicate with your computer. But no guaranty it always work.
With the correct driver, your camera acts like an external memory to the computer and the computer can read the pictures on the memory card in the camera.
So if you use a card reader or a camera on the computer always meme sure you have installed the correct software that came with the apparatus.
