Hi, I am having trouble with my fax machine. when printed copies and faxes come out, they have faded lines thru out the page. We have replaced the drum and the toner cartridge, but we are still having trouble.
It sounds like your machine needs a through cleaning from a repair company. There are many good independant vendors out there that will come out for less than $100 for a time and material call on your fax. If you want to try to do something on your own, you can take a can of air and spray the air throughout the machine. If you give me the city you live in, I can give you some ideas for some companies close by if the canned air doesn't work.

As the fax receives and prints incoming faxes ok then the print engine is working ok. the fact that the problem arises when copying or scanning indicates the problem is with the scanner or software that controls the scanner.
First clean both scanner glasses and the white area (white reference) under the doc feeder. When you are happy all is clean, follow the following instructions:
Press menu, * 2864 within 3 seconds. the display will show "Maintenance"
now press 55. The scanner will initialise and go back to "Maintenance"
now press 99 and the machine will go back to the default screen showing date and time.
Now do a copy. if you still have the lines or its all black then you will need a new contact image sensor. If all is well then that was a good cheap repair.
This is a clogged print head. This happens if the printer has been off for a long time or if the cartridge was removed and the unit left empty for any time. Take out the cartridge and press the print part on a piece of paper. Any black lines? If not, you will need a new cartridge. Wiping the print head gently with a Q-tip moistened with PURE alcohol (99%) may restore printing.
The problem may be in the machine you're sending to, if you get a copy thru the adf or on the glass with no lines, it's the same image you would send thru fax. Check the narrow glass though, I usually find white out on that glass and have to clean it off.
Initially, first check the settings of the machine if it was set to tel/fax or fax settings. Check if there was an error message appear on the unit or better to print out a copy of the fax transmission status. Fax machine will print out a copy of the transmission if it has a problem or it has a communication error on the line or in the other side whose receiving the a fax.
Sounds like you may need to clean the optics. Open up the area where you insert the original to copy, there you will find a small long glass that needs to be cleaned, I would suspect there is white out on this causing you lines or it may just be dirty.
Ok , I want to clarify. You have a line on all printing? When you receive a fax, when you print and when you copy?
If so, you need to replace the cartridge with the drum.
If It only is when you fax out and make a copy, then open the scanner and clean the strip over the CCD assembly in the scanner.
What happens is that something, Whiteout, ink from a page windes up getting on the scanner glass and as the original passes over it, it scans as a line and shows up on the paper as a line.
