SOURCE: tone arm comes out and touches record, then goes back to cradle

See what kind of arm position sensing elements are used in your turntable (micro switches, optics or possibly other) and check if they work correctly - sometimes a microswitch can be damaged or have oxydized internal contacts or a badly soldered / broken wire and it will not function properly, causing the unit to stop automatically, the same might happen if the sensor is of optical type and there is some dust or broken wires or if the emmiter or sensor is damaged. Also, it could be a problem with the part that activates the switch / optics, it might be displaced or damaged.

If all sensors / switches seem to work well, then check the section which has wires going to those sensors / switches, it's the next probable location of the fault (it might be an electronic controller so there could be damage to some components, broken wires, dirty connectors or bad solder contacts).

It could as well be something else in the mechanisms, wiring or electronics, i just suggested a few things that might cause the malfunction you described.

Hope you can get it fixed.

Tone arm not lifting when record is over

Hello Caufield,

Ideas... Yes, indeed,

But without a MAKE or MODEL they focus
a lot on ESP & other psychic capabilities...

(Mind reading: The lack thereof)... Sorry...!!

In ye olden daze...
when I was young the (stacked record CHANGERS &
simple turn table) TONE arms were largely Rube
Goldberg
electro-mechanical thingy-ma-call-it...
that triggered off of the wag action of the center grooves ...
(in all 78, 45 and 33 rpm records (once upon a time)).
Rube Goldberg Wikipedia

Without BENEFIT of year, make or model... ONE
might ACTUALLY look at the mechanical MECHANISM
and SEE the broken or missing spring, link or cam...

The very first/last action of ARM CONTROL was
the lift/lay action of the tone arm..

Without that FUNCTION "working" you are just
ruining records & needles...

My best advice would be to REPOST with
a hint of the proper nomenclature... I'm pretty sure
an appropriate volunteer expert will step forward.

Try it... you will like it and it is still totally FREE

Turn table doesn't start when tone arm is lifted

Did it used to start when you lifted the tonearm?

Many turntables start when the arm is moved over the record.

Tone arm keeps returning to rest on Crosley CR249

Hi, Try this. with it turned off. Lift tone arm across a record to the run out groove and set it down. Now power up and hopefully it will reset itself. In all honesty I would sell it and get a decent old school player. John. Styluscity.com

I have an old Califone 1400 all records skip new needle

There's not enough pressure to keep the stylus down in the grooves. Increase the weight (on the end of the arm).

Tonearm lifter in UP position - how to fix

I have also had this problem with the same model turntable. I opened mine up and the problem seems to have been that the grease on the arm lift and cueing lever was gumming up the linkage between the two. (I suspect that my turntable hadn't been used in some time.) I managed to free up the parts by manually working the the arm lift (pressing it down) several times. I'm not sure that I needed to open up the chasis for this fix but it did help me to see what was going on. Good luck with yours.

The tone arm will not drop on our Technics sl-dd33 turntable.

Have you left the tone arm lift in the up position?
If not: At the end of a record the mechanism lifts the tone arm, returns it to the rest, lowers it and switches off the motor.
It the motor has stopped too early, the tone arm will remain raised.
You can try gently rotating the platter clockwise by hand. This may allow the return cycle to finish.

Technics turn table

under the tone arm next to the lever ther is a sort of plastic bar which lifts the tone arm when lever is up right, look along that bar and there is a screw which you turn as you would to tighten anything.you will see the bar move down, try again and if you still have the same problem repeat the process till done......

Aiwa LX770 Turntable won't start

It's a bit after Jim's post, however I had what appears to have been the same problem with my LX770 after it had been stored in the loft for quite a few years. I found the problem to be caused by the tone arm mechanisms stalling - The band that was associated with lifting the arm had turned to a black gunge and was not allowing the motor to rotate, also the motor associated with moving the arm backwards and forwards was struggling to turn. I cleaned the tone lifting pulleys and replaced with a small elastic band (for a temporary fix). This was a little fiddly as you have to take off a spring and a couple of gears to get the new band in place. I cleaned the runners and cleaned off the grease on the worm gears associated with the arm tracking (as I suspected it may be more viscus than originally installed), lightly oiled the tone arm tracking gears. It still seamed to take an amount of helping the tracking arm gears until they were able to move freely. With the tone arm mechanisms working properly the whole unit now seams to be working.
Top tips if you attempt this: WARNING - If the unit is plugged in, the transformer and high voltage wires are live regardless of whether the on button is on or off on the front of the record deck. PLEASE do not take any of my comments as recommendation you should ever do anything with the unit plugged in! Remove the little stylus carrier before you start taking the player to pieces - saves damaging it! Remove the record mat and aluminium platter before turning the unit upside down. Manually push the tone arm to about 0.5cm from its furthest travel - so you can remove the tone arm mechanism plate. May be a little stiff as the wires have to slide of the pulleys for the tone arm to be pushed. To access the tone arm mechanisms, remove the main bottom plate (and greasy spring), then undo the screws which hold on the rear undertray. With the decks buttons toward you, you should then be able to lift the rear tray slightly and tilt the tray towards you to expose the tone arm mechanisms. You shouldn't need to remove the circuit board with the control buttons on the front of the unit.
After getting it going, I found that I needed a Phono preamp to get the signal strength necessary to use the deck for transferring vinyl to my PC.
Good luck
