Broaderbund Version 6 Family Tree Maker

I just bought a new Gateway Windows Vista. I need to transfer my Version 6 Tree maker from my Old 1997 Packard Bell Computer to the new one. Ancestry tells me Version 6 is not compatable with Windows vista. I have 9,400 entries in my Version 6. I really like the program I upgraded to the 6 from a 5, it was just an upgrade at that time. What shall I do.

    I hope you have an external back up of your FTM as you could loose a lot if your drive fails.

Hi madelyn evan,

Version 6 Family Tree Maker is designed to be used with Windows 95 / 98 , therefore in order to use it in Vista you must run your program using Compatinity Mode --> Install your software--> Go to your Desktop --> Right click on the program icon--> properties-->Compatibility--> select one of the versions above
I hope this helps. If so, please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly

I have been using FTM vs. 6 for years.......and I prefer to continue with it.

I have windows XP and got some viruses. Those problems have been reconciled and I'm using Kaspersky now.

I have over 65,000 people and related information I have been gathering for the last 30 years.

Now my program accepts new persons; but quits when I try to edit their notes; and sometimes old persons when I try to add new notes.

Can you please help me with this?

Sincerely,

Lynn W. Melberg, Ed. D.

I am using an older version of Family Tree maker version 9. I was terrified to think I was going to have to try and transfer my 15K names and data to a new program in order to make it work with my new computer running Win7. I backed up my FTM data from old computer to an external hard drive. I could use the program fine from the external drive.
I tried to copy it over to my new C drive and it would not work.
Confusing to say the least. It works fine on the computer frunning Win7 if I run it from the external drive.
=========================================
****** NOW I have the computer running FTM on my C drive and saving to my C drive with Win7*****
==========================================
If I open the FTM program itself - and click on Help there is a System information tab.
If I click that it shows all kinds of info program version, physical memory,
program directory as C:\FTW
save directory as J:\FTW ( which is my external)
save free space
temp directory
temp free space

There is a window Run with a drop down that has

So what I did do was change
I changed it to read
from
LastFile=J:\FTW\(file name).FTW
change to
LastFile=C:\FTW\(file name).FTW
(the file name is whatever you data is )
I also changed the
DataDir=J:\FTW
to C:\FTW
=======================================================
Saved it on my external drive with those changes and then copied the file over to my C drive.
Once I knew it was on my C drive, I turned off the external hard drive to make sure that there was no access.
======================
From my computer hard drive C - I opened FTW program and made sure that the settings were changed as above.
LastFile=C:\FTW\(file name).FTW
DataDir=C:\FTW
=======================
I have now pinned the program to my taskbar and put a shortcut onto my desktop and I am running just fine.
I have found no data loss and all functions are running just fine.
I only have made this work with my version 9 as that is the last update I had. I am thrilled to make it work on Win7 without having to purchase a new program just because of Win7.

I have a Vista (Windows) version of Family tree maker. I want to transfer my info from that version to a Mac version. Which versions will be compatible for the transfer??

There is a Family Tree Maker File Migration Utility that you run on the PC to convert either FTM 2010 or 2011 files to FTM for the Mac. Here's the link to the info on Ancestry.com:

MY OLD COMPUTER WINDOWS XPS RUNS FTM VERSION 10 FINE. MY NEW PC HAS WINDOWS 7 WILL NOT PERMIT INSTALLATION IS THERE A WAY TO INSTALL VERSION 10 ON WINDOWS 7?

The short answer is yes, Family Tree Maker 2010 is fully compatible with Windows 7.
The Family Tree Maker team has been working with Windows 7 for several months-even prior to the release of Family Tree Maker 2010. Since the "Release to Manufacture" (RTM) version of Windows 7 was released last August, we have done additional testing in our labs as well as with alpha and beta customers with no indication of incompatibility. Family Tree Maker 2008 and 2009 are also compatible with Windows 7.
As a point of interest, it may be helpful for people to know that we continually test Family Tree Maker with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
If you find a problem while running Family Tree Maker on your operating system, the best course of action is to contact customer support which can usually help you identify and solve the problem.

How do I upgrade my family tree maker 6

The current version of Family Tree Maker is version 2010. It installs as a brand new version and ignores the old version. The old version can be uninstalled at any time.
Your version will not be automatically read by the new version. There are instructions to import your current files into the new program at this link.
There is a set of Frequently Asked Questions at this link that address the requirements to run the new version. You should read through them to make sure your system can run this program update.
