Zoom error when I turn on my camera it comes up with a blue screen with zoom error written on it, it starts beeping and then switches itself off. I have no idea why it has just started doing this? any advice would be great?

I have an Olympus 700 All weather digital camera. It has been working great but yesterday when I turned it on the lens went out but the picture was very blurry and then with seconds the lens retracted and went back in again and I have a blue screen with 5f08 and 5f02 in the top left hand corner. I have recharged the battery and deleted a whole load of pictures but it just won't work. When I tried connecting it the Computer. the compter could not recognise the camera.I have an Olympus 700 All weather digital camera. Same problem but it only happens occasionally then 10 mins later its OK. Its really annoying as I use the camera as my main diving camera when on holiday and I don't want it to play up when I go away but cant send it back for repair as the problem isnt always there.

It sounds like some part of the power zoom mechanism has failed. It could be repairable but with the age of the camera I doubt it would be worth it- something else may fail and a newer camera would also provide improved image quality.
Zoom and/or lens errors, they're common, and bad news. This is such a common problem that someone has written a blog just
addressing this one error. You can read
it here - it describes it far more completely than I ever could!
The problem you are describing is a problem with something in the lens assembly. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced.
Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if outside of the one year factory warranty period. The cost is $144.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.
when the lens comes out, gently pull it as far as it will go, wiggle it a bit and it should right itself. just tried it with mine and it's sorted.
nice
Dirt /dust in the lens and lens gear box ( this drives zooming only ) preventing optimum functioning. Lens cannot properly come on line ( shutter and diaphragh mechanism then do not come on line ) and the camera switches off. Solution : is ether replace lens unit or dismantle lens to clean out ( from gear box and the helicoil of the lens ).
