I have a problem with my CD/DVD drive on my Presario laptop. About 8 months ago, my computer mysteriously stopped recognizing the drive. Then, as mysteriously as the problem arose, about a month later the drive started working again and all was fine. Then, about a month ago, the drive stopped working again, meaning I cannot use this drive at all. The disc drive is still getting power, and I can open and close the drive without problem, but it is not recognized. Any solutions? I am a graduate student and quite anxious to burn the large amount of material on my computer to a back up CD. Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem on a sony vaio. What worked for me was to shut the laptop down, remove the cd-rom module and clean the connections with a soft bristled paint brush and put it back firmly in place. restart. All it was was a connection problem.

Most CD/DVD drives have a small hole in the face plate that allows you to insert a paperclip-sized object to open the drive. Just press it straight in until you feel it depress a button, and the drive should open. If it doesn't work after that, it may be dead.

I had the exact same symptoms on my Compaq Presario 1700 laptop. I replace the DVD/CD drive with the 3-1/2 inch drive which worked ok. I therefore reasoned that the problem is not in the laptop but in the DVD/CD drive. Upon removing the cover and the plastic frame, I discovered there is an adapter plug that shifts the internal drive connector over to mate with the internal laptop connector. This drive is very flimsy, and I reasoned that this adaptor could lose contact if flexed often enough when loading CD's. The adaptor is held in by two screws through the plastic frame. I removed the adaptor and cleaned all pins on it and the drive connector with a good quality contact cleaner/lubricant and reassembled it. The drive worked perfectly. I tried the same trick on a used DVD/CD drive I purchased to replace my "faulty" drive that turned out to have the same problem. After having payed $100 for it. After cleaner/lubricant on the adaptor connectors, it also was restored to operation. Maybe I was just lucky with these drives but it may be worth a try.

I HAVE A DELL INSPIRION 3500 AND I CHANGE THE DVD ROM AND THE BIOS NOT RECONIZE THE DVD ROM? please help me
I read on another forum to try and delete the cd/dvd driver (go to control panel and then device manager, then locate the cd driver) and then re-start your computer and this should get it back to working. If not, then you probably need a new driver. i tried to do this to my twice, but it still does not work.):
The disc drive will open and close but it wont play or open the file, it also wont register on the disk list.
My V2000 is about three years old. The DVD/CD drive stopped handleing CDs, but can play DVDs fine. the BIOS find its fine, and Windows knows its there, but it cant boot CDs, This is kinda crazy
