Unit had been playing perfectly since I got it in February, 2005 and today just froze with the DVD picture on the screen. Pressing buttons on the remote to no avail I used the buttons on the unit. It turned off and then turned on but kept blinking reading as the DVD soun up. Tried different DVDs but no joy. It will shut off by pushing the power button. Opened the unit up and tried to clean the lens but same problem. Any ideas?

bought a new dvd (sony) and use the rest of the unit (amp) and everythink fine now. Thanks anyway.
From my post 7 years ago above:
It lasted for years including a Blu-ray replacement (PS3) of the new DVD player. Now I use the old units for the guest room. Replaced the Yamaha amp with a Denon AVR-3805 amp and a new free refurbed PS3 from Sony. I also replaced my Panasonic LiFi TV which Panasonic graciously covered. I'm a Panasonic man, YEA PANASONIC!. I purchased a Panasonic plasma which according to my brother Mike, (an AV expert as well as CNET and Consumer Reports review) is the best bang for the buck. See the recent CNET articles:
Best Plasma TV's and Best TV picture quality but get them while you can as they last forever and are an excellent buy. I thought about buying a spare but I will probably never use it. Unfortunately they will stop production of their plasmas next year.
