I had the exact same problem. I turned on my HP Photosmart E317 camera and it would light up for one second and then just a blank screen. Here's the tech support site from HP. Try taking out your memory card and then turn it on. That worked for me. I just put the memory card back in and it works fine. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00709691&lc=en&cc=de&dlc=de&product=445953&rule=2137&lang=de

SOURCE: camera won't turn on

I am assuming that the power does not go on or it immediately turns off as it is turned on.

Try the docking station or the 3.3 AC adapter to the camera. Plug that in to live power. If you hear the lens motor (by default the lens is retracted to closed position when plugged to AC power), then the camera is operational. If not, there is power failure with the camera.

If the lens motor work, then try to turn the camera while plugged to AC power. If it turns on, then there is something wrong with the battery or with the chamber. If the camera does not turn on, then check the button board for a bad power switch.

Check the LCD closely under a bright light when you do this test. You may see a faint a flash of display that disappears. I have not figured out what causes this. This would mean that camera power supply is working but nothing is telling for the camera to stay on.

The camera (Powershot S5 IS) suddenly quit working. It will not power on (tried two sets of fresh batteries). Am I overlooking something very simple? Is it related to the small button battery that...

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

DSC-T70 camera got wet and now won't power on. Battery seems to charge fine.

I'm guessing you tried to turn it on way too soon and fried the circuits. A camera with fresh water damage should be buried in a bowl of dry rice for a week before even attempting to turn it on. Salt water damage?....chances of a complete recovery are slim to none.

Hp photosmart 720

My Photosmart 720 has also just stopped working. It simply won't turn on, with battery or mains power. So I took it to pieces. Inside is a thumbnail battery, labelled "5.5v 0.33f" which tests out at 3.0v DC. I surmise that the purpose of this battery is to remember the settings when the main batteries run out - but it could conceivably have some other purpose, like helping it to boot. Whatever the reason, it has clearly run down and I would guess that the other people on this list have hit exactly the same problem.

If I'm right, and the camera depends upon this very-hard-to-access battery, it is shocking that HP could get away with selling a camera designed like this. It implies that the camera was cynically designed with the expectation that it would be thrown away after (I would guess) five years. How's that for built-in obsolescence ? It *may* be possible to remove and replace this battery without damaging the camera, but there certainly isn't a manual that tells you how... is there ?

Camera won't retrack

August - this sounds like the same problem I had with my Finepix510. Turns out the new unopened package of batteries I put in weren't fresh enough and weren't working. When I got truly fresh batteries, everything started working just fine again.

Hope that turns out to be true for you.

Camera wont work when memory card is inserted

I suggest you try to use a different memory card. If it doesn't happen again then it's probably a bad memory card.
