My C5100n will print all colors on a page except black. I initially encountered the problem last week, although the problem then was that the black ink was not setting. Color images looked good, but the black was smeared. I replace the black toner cartridge, and my problem was solved for a couple of days. Now, no black will print at all. This occurs for both text and graphics.
I'm having the same problem except I've changed both the toner cartridge and drum and still not printing black. You say to clean the leeds ... um .... not to sound dumb but where in the world is that? Is that the connection areas on the drum? Did that. I gently cleaned the "bar" that hangs down from the lid when you open it. Still not printing black. Adjusted the registration a couple of times. Still not printing black. All other colors printing including the Cyan that says is out.

I'm having a problem with my black ink as well. It prints out but is faded. I changed the toner and the drum is still good. All other colors print out fine. Any suggestions? This may not be a solution, but certainly a troubleshooting trick. Move one of the color drums to the black area, and the black drum to the color one you just moved. If the problem follows the drum, the drum is defective - if the problem stays with the black "area" then you have a probem related to the electronics of the printer. Clean all contacts and test again.

Greyscale is color not black only.
You can print in black and it will look grayscale only darker, printers are a pain to work with after a year has gone by, I can expect almost a half hour to print something with my $400 epson because one of the colors is out even though I never printed in the last year a colored page. I take the color cartirges out and they are empty, but I only print a page 2-3 times a year. I use the scanner all the time. Brother and epson have their print heads in the printer not the cartridge so make sure your inks are always have something in it or it will be miricle for the printer to last more than a year. Check colors every other week. One Epson printer only lasted 3 months because I never used it(print head dried up). Never use the set up with tubes running outside printer to small tanks of ink if you only use it occationally.
I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".
This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.
it´s pretty strange but if u replaced both toner and drum, the printer doesn´t give any error u may have the high voltage board damaged, and u can't do much, u must contact a local dealer
some printers share the ink from color to black but you can select if you wants to use only black just go to printer than properies than select to use only black but you probably have to remove the empty color one
What is the stats % of drums if low under 50% change them, soon as you add non Gen you throw a spanner in any attempt to fault find, fix is possible toner more than likely drum/drums, do a print of each colour and change drums as indicated by failure in its colour to print, check transport belt is OK and led heads are clean
I need to know if the test page that the unit prints as "Demo Page" comes out fine. If this is the case, your problem is within your application (software) or computer connection (check all cables). If this is NOT the case, I'll need to know more about your scenario. Operating system, type of connection (USB, parallel) and what are you trying to print. I'll be waiting.
