If I understand you correctly, when you leave the handset in the cradle and press a line, you can hear the dial tone. But, if you lift the handset and then select a line you don't hear anything through the headset. If this is correct, I suspect the handset is damaged, the cord is damaged, or if you're lucky, the clips may not be plugged all the way in on both sides. If you have another phone that is the same, you can switch handsets to test this theory.
Do you mean send the call to another phone?
Make sure the line is not on hold (push the caller's line) then push Cnf/Trn, dial the extension you want the call to go to, then hang up.
The person you're sending to will receive that call on their speakerphone button and it will ring in a different tone.
Lift the handset, press the FWD/DND button, dial 2 and the extension you want your calls to forward to, you should get a comformation tone, hang up the handset.
Cancel the fordwarding by lifting the handset, press the FWD/DND button, dial 0 , get tone, hang up.

Does anyone know how to add PAUSE in a stored dial string?
This would normally happen when the cordless handset was still in the charger stand. Are you saying it will still tell you to lift the handset after it's removed from the charger stand or base?
I would not waste money buying a new battery as it is most likely not the problem but if you have more than one handset you should try swapping batteries. Removing and re-inserting the battery may reset the phone and clear up the problem as well.
