Question about IBM TravelStar 40GN 20 GB Hard Drive
Does anyone know what this type of connection is called? - the socket on the hdd case is not any usual type of firewire or usb socket, and seems to be something specific to ibm travelstar external hdd's Thanks.
The dearlership should know what you need. the reason the socket is so different is to let you know, the stuff in which contained in this part is very sensitive and could major problems if you are not sure what your doing

I assume you can't see it in Windows? When you connect it can you hear the drive spin up? If not then there is a hardware problem - motor failure, jammed platter. If you hear it clicking or clunking then it is likely to be a stuck head or actuator. If so sometimes you can give the drive a sharp **** to and fro to try and spin the platter - don't do to long though. If this doesn't work then you would need the data removed by a data retrieval company.
If the drive does spin freely you may be able to fix by doing in order:
running check disk (properties of drive then tools)
using a data recovery program of which there are a few
using commercial data retrieval company.
Hope this helps

You can buy an adaptor that will connect your hard drive to a pc.
Ribbon cable from your secondary drive on pc goes into the adapator. Adaptor also coonects to laptop harddrive.
You also need to change from being a master driveto be a slave drive . see linkbelow.

You can then copy file to pc a usb memory stick.

The IBM webite will have the software located under the support link. You will need to lookup your specific model # and then the files will appear. Download and install those that you need. Hope this helps.

Also, the socket is rectangular, with a 'notch' in the middle of its top side
The cable fits into a USB socket at the 'pc-end' , and into the unusual socket at the 'drive-end'' - this is rectangular, with a 'notch' half-way along its top side, and 5 pins inside. Thanks
