Black rectangle on bottom half of screen

I have a Zenith SEQ stereo television, Model # SMS2518RK, Serial # 481-34251-043, manufactured in June of 1994. Suddenly, a black rectangle appears on the bottom half of the screen afer a few seconds of the t.v. being turned on. The rectangle covers the entire width. It blacks out that part of the screen, but the rest of the image is normal. Could this have to do with the aspect ratio? How do I fix this?

Black rectangle on bottom half of screen
The "Caption" mode may be on and set to "Text". To fix press MENU button on the remote then use down arrow to select "Setup" and press ENTER. Select "Caption" and press ENTER. Select "Off" and press ENTER. Press MENU again to exit setup.

It is your Closed Captioning malfunctioning. You can try and access the menu and turn the CC off but more times than not it is a malfunction that is unfixable.

The box you're seeing is the "closed caption' box. You need to use the remote and disable CC mode on it, and the box will go away :)

Visio LCD TV - Partial Picture blacked.
Hello! I have a 32" Vizio LCD...within 30 minutes of the tv being turned on, black lines start running through the bottom half of the screen and eventually blacking out the bottom half of the tv screen. It also doesn't have anything to do with the ratio as I have tried that. HELP!

My Zenith SEq Stereo TV was purchased in 1993. The picture is only 4-5 inches in height and black at the top & bottom. Is this fixable?
Yes it is fixable. There are one or more bad caps in the vertical circuit. If you would post the model number listed o the back of the set, I should be able to give you more details.

2 Problems
this answer has given also to some one had the same problem.
"On your remote should be a button called TV caption or text. Turn off the closed caption as someone hit it and turned it on by accident. If its not on your remote, then it is in the menu." Good Luck

Zenith SL2773W problem
The dark rectangle appears because you have the closed captions on and set to TEXT. Closed captions set to CC1 puts the words on the screen and TEXT puts a black box on the screen. Go into the menu, navigate to the page with closed captions and set your captions to OFF.
