This is a "budget" camera on the low end of the quality scale. Quality control isn't very good and if you just bought it, return it...it's obviously defective.
This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
I have had the same problem with my camera. After some years without any reason the message E:01:01 appears on the screen and the display shows only black.
I dissamble the camera, clean all contacts and after assembling the camers does works as before.
