Hello
I bought this new system two days ago and I never managed to open the CD tray since.
The disply shows "Open" and the system really tries to open the tray two to three times, but it will not open.
I turned everything off by the plug several times and waited a couple of minutes until the next go.
Everything else works perfect.
Do I have to "unlock" the tray in some way or is it a known technical malfunction?
Any help is much appreciated
Thank you

Re: CD tray doesn't open
If the unit actually tries to open but does not, it is not locked. a locked unit does not even try to open. it sound like a mechanical misalignment. take it back to get a new one, since it's only 2 days old.

Windows Key-E will bring up windows explorer which should show your list of available drives.
If this doesn't show your CD drive then try removing CD from drive. Does the disc tray open?
If so then reboot system without disc and try the above method to find cd-drive.
If this doesn't work you may need to involve more hands on trouble-shooting.
Thanks
This problem is easily repaired! The belt that drives the mechanism is worn out (relaxed) and slides on the motor pulley. Just open the device (from the bottom and then drag the body up by removing the edges). You have to put a new belt section ø 35 mm 1 mm and the unit will work again. (hello from France)
Premature failure of this drive appears to be a widespread issue. I have joined in a support thread at HP and encourage you to do the same: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/CD-DVD/Hp-dvd-1040i-Disk-tray-doesn-t-open-half-the-time/m-p/347544#M1980
TIMING ADJ...AC DISCONNECT !! OPEN TOP LID CHANGE MAIN BELT BY MOVING THE TRAYS. PLUG IN AND CHECK IF NOT NEED ADJUST TIMING FOR THE WEELS. ONLY EXPERTS FREDDY.R ISRAEL
If you had any cds inside, you can open the case and see whether there's any cd jammed, with the power switch off! If you didn't have any cds inside, open the case anyway and check if the tray opens or not!!!
I have the same exact problem with my Onkyo C-707CHX and I found a
solution that doesn't involve jamming any screws or other metal objects
into your cd tray (which could most likely just cause more damage).
This way seems a little safer: Power on your device and hit the open
button. As soon as you hit the open button quickly push slightly with
both hands on both sides of the cd tray that should be opening. You
should hear the trays moving around in there and then you have to try to
feel for a slight push from the tray. As soon as you feel that slight
push, take your hands off of the tray and let it come out. This has
been working for me for a while now (and hopefully will continue to work
until I take it to get fixed somewhere). The only issue I have run
into is that my "Disc 1" open button doesn't work with this method. So I
just use this method with disc 2 or 3 and then once it's open I can hit
the disc 1 button to get to that tray. So if it doesn't work with one
tray, try the other two as well. Hope this helps.
