If the last suggestion i posted didn't work, you need to put in your Windows CD on boot up and when it asks if you want to repair or install press 'R' for repair, this should repair any damaged registry files and Windows files.

My Gateway file c0000218 registry failure the registry cannot load the hive /SystemRoot/System/32/Config/System or its log or alternate is. It is corrupt, absent or, not writable.

it sounds like you have a bad sector on the part of the hard drive containing this file. you need to let chkdsk complete the scan as it may be able to recover the corrupt file and isolate the bad sector so its not used again.
if this works backup the system as your hard drive may be failing.

Hi

files in system32\config\ are missing or corrupt.
there is a back up stored by default at c:\windows\repair
you can copy the contents of windows\repair folder into system32\config\ and it should solve the problem, you can do it with the windows installation cd by using the recovery console.

Go into the repair folder enter the following commands in repair console

cd windows (press enter)
cd repair (press enter)
copy *.* c:\windows\system32\config\ (press enter)

files should be copied

type exit, quit or restart or reboot to restart the computer.

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

to fix the problem, you need the Installation cd, put it in, start the setup, and enter repair console when the first blue menu comes up.

In repair console, your going to have to copy the windows\repair directory to system32\config

to fix the problem.

After the files have been copyed, Well maybe might be better if you only copy the SECURITY file. so no login details get changed.

Then restart the pc and see if it worked. If not your going to have to perform a repair installation from the xp cd.

If you need more asistance, let me know. Good luck.

Registry file failure

This sounds like a previously removed piece of sofware, either a peice of a programme spyware, virus or malware, thats still got the start up files registered. Download this programme, it's very good, it's free and has no spyware attached, it will remove all traces of unused registry files and temporary files. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ If you still have problems click Start>Run and type 'msconfig' without quotes. This will bring up a window; click the startup tab and see if there are any unrecognised programmes on start up that you no longer use.
