Kenmore Dishwasher My dishwasher fills with water and then stops. I hear the cycle timer continue all the way through the cycle. I pulled the screen off the bottom inside of the dishwaher and stuck my hand in the diswasher drain. Originally I felt and cleared what appeared to be a torn up rubber band. I feel a thin straight metal pin that I can rotate and I believe it causes the pump to rotate as well. Once I do that the dishwasher will run normally thorough a complete cycle...BUT I have to go through this ritual about every other cycle. My theory (uneducated as it is) is that the water pump loses prime until I rotate the thin metal pin. I do not have any water leaks. I've checked. Do I need a new water pump? Or is it something else?

I have had this happen before on my dishwasher. The timer inside the door is stuck or the contacts on the timer may have broken off. When you turn the knob on the dishwasher it sends power to a timer, which continually turns until the end of the cycle. This timer is attached to a bunch of arms which close contacts to send power to different parts of the dishwasher during different times in the cycle, now if the timer is worn out and missing parts of its gears or missing some of the armatures the machine will only get so far along in the cycle until it doesn't know what to do next and just stops. if still it doesn't fix your problem then see whether any error codes are generated....

Note: Lights blinking, pump running and controls dead indicates an over fill fault 1. Disconnect the power to the unit

2. Remove the lower access panels and check the tray under the dishwasher (you will probably find it is full of water)

3. Use a towel or a sponge to remove the water

4. There is a float that should stop the operation of the dishwasher and run the pump if water is in this tray. Check this pump to see if it is functional

5. Test the dishwasher

6. If there are no leaks from the dishwasher into the pan, check the drain hose under the sink

7. THE DRAIN HOSE MUST RUN UP TO THE TOP OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE COUNTERTOP THEN DOWN TO THE DRAIN. (If the hose is not set up like this, water from the sink drain will flow into the dishwasher and overfill the tray

Two things to consider....clean water or dirty water?
Clean water usually indicates the fill valve is not shutting off all the way and the fill valve is "weeping" water in all the time = new fill valve time!!
Dirty water usually is not a dishwasher problem but more of a plumbing issue. Often the sink drain that carries the sinks water outside is not fast enough and some of this sink water is backing up into the drain hose and filling up the dishwasher through the drain hose. The drain from the sink to outside needs attention as this type of a problem indicates a slow house drain for that sink.
The dishwasher drain line should be clamped to the top underneath part of the counter before entering the sink drain plumbing, this may help the water from coming back inside the dishwash
