I have an older GE set (model #27GT610). When we first turn it on, the TV will come on OK, but then it will suddenly turn itself off for a second and then comes right back on. It sometimes does that two or three times in the first two minutes we have the set on, but then it will stop. I don't know if this is related, but after the TV's been on a while, the picture will drop out but the sound will stay on. I've found that problem is corrected by turning the set off and back on using the remote control.
Your problem could be as simple as bad solder connections on the main high voltage transformer or in the sweep power supply. Without doing some probing around inside the set while it is turned on, this is a hard call my freind. If the set is over 5 to 8 years old, it is most likly age related as the Printed circuit boards, as they heat up and cool, will develop poor solder connections, ring cracks around the solder connectios and also heat related problems with some of the internel componets. This is a solid state TV set, and has no user replaceable parts inside. So if you have the know how around solid state TV circuits, and know how to solder, then maybe, just maybe you will be able to get this puppy to work just a little bit longer. if you do not, it is time im afraid to put this beast to rest and buy a new early holiday gift. Good Luck Please do not forget to rate this thread.

Thanks for the expert advice, Techman! This saves me a wasted trip to the repair shop. The TV is actually about 10 years old, so I hear what you're saying--it's time to pull the plug and buy a new set!
