Question about GE JE1640WA/GA Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave works with the door open

It started in the last few weeks. We use our microwave and when we open the microwave starts to run (lights are one, turn table turns). Again, it appears to be running. I don't know what it is causing the problem. I tried to close the door harder and sometimes it stops doing this, but it comes back after a few tries. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Carlos

Your comment is right on the money! I have committed several of the things you mentioned (open the door before it finished, closing the door too hard - my kids do that all of the time). It sounds like it is time to purchase a new one. The door frame is also broken.

    Thank you again!

Lately when the microwave is done, I open the door, remove the item, close the door and voila! It starts running on it's own! The light is on, the fan is on, the table is turning, but there is no time you think this is also from shutting the door to hard too many times?? Time to get a new one maybe??

The top door switch is almost certainly defective or loose. Most likely the latter, and possibly due to a loose or broken mount. Chances are that only the fan and light are on, but it's not wise to take chances with microwave energy, whuch can cause burns and fire. One way to possibly test this theory is to pull up gently on the door and see if it stops doing it. But that's not a foolproof test. A broken or loose mount can be caused by inadequate plastic or improper assembly techniques during manufacturing, by slamming the door, or other physical damage. Bad door switches are usually caused by opening the door while it's cooking instead of hitting the STOP KEY first. I have a helpful text file on door switches with safety tips that will help you. You can find it by searching on (not Google) for microwave safety.txt Good luck and be safe!

Opening the door tripped breaker a few times, now microwave will not power on.

Sounds like a bad switch should have three primary, secondary, and monitor switch after 5 years change all 3 they are not the same primary and secondary are NO ( normally open ) and the monitor NC ( normally closed ) unit will not come on the fuse on the filter board is blow this usually shorts out the filter board change the switches first and replace fuse may not have to replace filter board hopes this helps.

My JE 1860 microwave starts working when I open the door.

It sounds like the door switch is bad. It may be that the switch is shorted inside. I would think it may really run with the door open, and microwave you.

GE microwave won't turn off

Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.

One or more door switches is bad, or the switch mount is loose or broken.
