Question about Philips 32PT5441/37 32" TV

1 Answer

TV Problem My television has lines running across the screen. It started at just the top but now every time we turn on the tv there are a few more and now they are almost half way down the screen. We still have color and sound. The tv is only a year old. Is it going to need to be replaced?

The lines are white and the picture isn't distorted to badly. I am currently living out of the country and finding a tech is a little hard is it something I can do?

No. Are the lines white or black? Does the picture look distorted at the top? Is there a chance it is still under warranty? It sounds like a problem in the vertical retrace circuit. Probably a capacitor near an IC that's used for timing. You shouldn't be having this issue already. A tech should be able to see a distorted waveform in the vertical section. Hope this helps.

It depends on your comfort level when working on TV chassis. You mentioned that you're out of the country. Is the TV standard where you're at the same as the one where you bought the set? That could explain a lot.

TV TURNS ON,LINES ACROSS SCREEN THEN TURNS OFF BY ITSELF

sounds like a vertical problem, usually you'll see one white line across the screen, but one I worked on would come on and the bottom half of the picture was gone and there were lines across the top of the screen.

If you know how to solder & can find the vertical output chip then you could try resoldering the pins. If this doesn't fix it then it needs new parts.

Insignia 32" TV Thin line across screen 1-2" from top

The original white line problem was caused by improper adjustment of the vertical size for which there is an internal adjustment. The current problem could come from two different sources, one an adjustment again, the other from a capacitor that is losing capacitance and gaining losses; = sick.
If you are fortunate enough to have a surviving TV repair in your area, none of these problems is expensive to find or correct.
Don't be surprised to find the only TV shop operating out of a messy garage since those of us doing this kind of service are dying off and the price one can charge for labor has shrunken to the point that a real business address is too expensive to have.

This is usually caused by bad capacitors in the vertical circuit. If you have an electronics background you should be able to find the defective ones with an ESR tester .
