Backlight inop sometimes

Lately the backlight on my wifes unit has been inop. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The unit is less than a year old. Any ideas on how to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.

My screen light went off. Internet is working I can see the background.

1. First make sure the backlight was not turned off by inadvertently cycling the "CRT/LCD" function- the key combination "Fn" + "F8" is used by Dell but EVO may be different. Hold down the "Fn" (function) key and press the "F8" (or EVO equivalent) a few times and see if the backlight comes back on. (The purpose is to turn off the notebook backlight if a standalone monitor is used.)

2. You might find that the switch that shuts the backlight off is stuck. Sometimes there is a little piece of plastic sticking above the surface of the of computer base (often near the hinge). Sometimes it is pretty well hidden, and sometimes it is completely internal.

(NOTE: The above solutions assume the backlight never comes on. If it goes off after a period time there could be a hardware problem - with the backlight itself or its inverter board).

3. By the way, you can connect a standalone monitor into the appropriate laptop connector and use it until you figure out what is wrong with the backlight. I'm doing that myself right now. You must get the CRT/LCD correct to do this.

Acer travelmate 2410

This doesn't necessarily rule out the inverter. I've had inverters with intermittent problems that had the same effect, so having the inverter tested is the only way to rule it out. Other possibilities are a bad connection, a corroded/dirty pin or socket in a connector, a bad ribbon/cable, and a failing backlight. If it is a failing backlight, the entire screen will need replaced, as the screen is considered a sealed unit and the backlight isn't available and not considered a replaceable item. Also, it's rare, but it could have a faulty motherboard component or video card. I'm leaning towards a faulty backlight, but keep in mind the inverter and cable possibility. Start by checking and cleaning all connections.
